Skin Care for My Barefeet

Friends,

As I slowly seek to expand my mileage running barefoot over blacktop roads, varyingfrom smooth to rough, I would like some guidance fromall those in BRS who have blazedthe trail before me:
  • What is the best skin care product for the soles of the feet to recover faster between runs? Blisters are few and far between now, butmy feet still get sore. I read that coconut oil is good. Is it? Is there something better?
  • I carry apair of cheap aqua socks to put onwhere the roads havea lot ofgravel. Is that the best way to improve, or should Ifocus more ontechnique and run lightly without these minimalist shoes?

I have used coconut oil, but beware! This makes you liable for a nice, self-induced slip and fall on smooth flat surfaces until it is fully absorbed into the skin. I have also used a good lotion, and it seems to get into the skin faster, but I am not sure it's "better" if you know what I mean. Other than that you may want to clean your feet with a good, natural glycerin soap. Very hydrating, and if you get organic, it is really nice stuff. Some homemade, old-fashioned lye soaps are made with coconut oil (instead of lard), so you may want to look into that as well.

Hi there,

I believe Jojoba oil is very good for the skin as it is similar in composition to the oils in the skin. It absorbs very fast too. I have a bottle of it that I use to rub on my feet when they start to look a bit dry.

Cheers

I use a 50/50 mix of beeswax and olive oil gently heated on the stove. Pour the liquid into small container. The cooled block looks and feels like lipsol. Just before going to bed I rub the salve into the foot pads.

This is from the barefoot sisters who hiked the Appalachian trial barefoot.

Those ladies are the real deal. I watched a NatGeo program on the AT this month with my wife. I was under the impression that just completing it in one go was pretty rare. They never mentioned anyone yo-yo-ing the trail, so it must be all but unheard of. I love the barefooting advice on the website. Isis looks like she has some major plantar build up going on in that one pic. She looks like someone that could run on gravel and walk on glass and not worry about it.
