Sidewalks in Charles Town, WV

On a trip to Charles Town, WV.

Ichose a beautiful stretch of road through the middle of this historic town for a barefoot run on Monday. The halfway point is a railroad track that marks the outside of town. The distance is a little over 5K from the main highway to the tracks and back. The sidewalks are a combination of red brick, new cement, dirt, and gravelwith large segments pushed upward from tree roots growing below. The two-lane road is pavement.

I drank some water, and with aqua socks in hand, I took off forthe firstrun. The temperature was in the mid 90's with a heat index somewhere above that. Not bad all in all.

The paved road from the hotel wasfairly comfortable. The sidewalks after that, while beautiful in appearance, wherevery challenging with sharp cracks, concrete chips, and points. After a blood blister slip, I put the aqua socks on for the rest of the run. This was a great learning experience! Appearances can be discieving and carryingshoes when running in a new place is a great plan. Thanks Michael Sandler at Runbare for this recommendation!Carrying shoeseasily transformed what could have been a very unpleasant experience into a fun run in a new place.

I ran the route again yesterday andslipped on the shoes for the areas that are presently beyond my skills and took them off for those that I was more comfortable with.

Run lightly,

I think of those sidewalks as an agility/plyometrics workout cause I jump around to miss the cracks and such

It's the old Boy Scout motto -- always be prepared! Great story, man!
