?

Would you (men only) go barechested in hot weather at outdoors in public places?

At least they're running and not starring at each other and looking at each other's butt when they line up:p

Hmm - I appear to have started something here! Couldn't agree with Dama and DNE Chris more. Taking one more bold step - if you want to try a game where you can throw the ball - try rugby - no padding at all.....

and back to the topic, I'm sorry if my appearance isn't someone's favorite, but the idea of what is modest is so variable that most rules about exactly what to cover are just one group imposing their comfort level on someone else. I personally think all women prettier than me should stay covered because that's fair! On the other hand, women who are in exercise deprived have a tendency to be offended by the way my jeans fit...

Besides that, I just cannot function if I am over dressed for the temps. Wipes me out. So should I dress to make everyone else comfortable or so that I am most effective with what I am doing?

I just tested it out. Packet pick-up for Saturday's race started at 5:00 p.m. today at a Methodist church functioning as race headquarters in the bustling city of Royal Oak MI. I was two hours early and had my bicycle with me in the 88 degree very humid storm-every-other-hour weather conditions, so I ended up riding Main Street 5 miles up, 5 miles back, 5 miles up, etc. from busy Ferndale to Royal Oak to Clawson and back in real bike shorts, sunglass/readers, biker bandanna/skull cap and nothing else. Mixed results. The "Woo Hoo's" all came from high school aged girls. The church lady handing me my packet averted her eyes. Most of the guys pretended not to notice.
So social acceptability is apparently just as variable as is the barefoot thing.

Legal yes - but almost every restaurant and bar except for those on a beach or pool have a "no shirt, no shoes - no service" sign on the door. A friend of mine sat at a restaurant and had dinner - but the manager only noticed he was barefoot when he was about the pay the bill - so they were not about to kick him out before that was done! I have seen folks in supermarkets barefoot and not challenged. I am guessing it is up to each establishment to set their own rules and sometimes even within establishments different managers have different levels of tolerance. For regular restaurants though - definitely a no-no.

Just to go back on topic a bit I run shirtless all the time, even in the winter, because I have ice in my veins

Well, I am not like Bob, I have real blood in my veins. When the weather gets to the point where I just get to warm, off goes the shirt.

That photo was not really from a running event, actually there was a bit of running but mostly canoeing and biking for an adventure race in the wild backcountry of our great nation (break into a fantastic rendition of 'O' Canada).
Yes I do wear a shirt and even shorts sometimes. But if it is hot out or I am getting a little bit on the flushed side, I have no issue pulling off the shirt during the run. See proof here is me on Jan. 1 of this year, it was a balmy -31 with the windchill.

Wow, from the posts here sometimes England seems like hippy-ville in comparison! Seriously, some people find it unacceptable for blokes to be bare chested on the beach or by the pool??? Crazy! I'd find it somewhat odd in a restaurant or cinema & I'd be annoyed if someone was sweating all over the produce in the veg aisle, but beyond that I couldn't really care less. And yes, it's often not a very attractive sight, but so what?

Here, we have blackflies. A lot of men like to wear shirts even when it's hot because of the black flies. You can outrun mosquitos, but the black flies? You SMACK into them, they stick to you, and they bite.

We just survived a week of Fish flies. They don't bite, but they land on you and stay!
Every time I walked into the house my wife had to grab them by the wings and pull them off my back.
But at 88 degrees F and high humidity, I still spent most of the week shirtless no matter what I was doing.
I did put on a shirt to see Ken Bob though, while tornadoes touched down only 20 miles away during his presentation.

    Seen this one, Longboard?

I lived in a fish fly free zone when I was in Michigan. Lucky me.
