Barefoot Runners are the Best Neighborhood Watch

I am learning to be aware of little things as I run barefoot near my home. The sidewalks, trails, and fields are constantly changing in subtle ways. It was one thing to be aware while running in shoes. Barefoot running requires a whole new level of mindfulness to run safely. My background of 20+ years in law enforcement recommends another area for mindfulness:

There are a lot of runners in the world. Runnerswho can see, hear, and feel the changes in their terrain and in their neighborhoods. Weshould remain aware of suspicious behaviors or environmental hazardsthat are out of the normal. Aware runners with a cellular phone can save lives, call in illegal dumping, notify EMS, call the police regarding a potentialprowler, or other suspicious activity.
