26.5 min-shod miles so far this week. This morning's run was delightful, about -7C, light snow, no wind. I felt like I was flying! So much fun I ran 2 miles more than usual just 'cos.

Had an interesting conversation in the middle of it but more of that elsewhere!

First run of '15 for me. That Alberta Clipper is hitting us, and we had some snow overnight about 4" so far. Its really only the second storm I think we've had more than an inch. Temps dropping and are going to continue to drop tomorrow. I was just going to do a short run from the house so figured I'd try barefoot since I've been constantly running lower and lower temps then I ever have. Well today might have been a little past my limit, at 19F/-7C and (7F/-14C with wind chill). And no warm pavement advantage due to the sun being out, everything was white here! Luckily my hands were getting so cold that I turned back into the house after 1.4mi to bundle up more, including my SoftStars, or else I might have faced some frostbite. Continued on after I warmed back up, 3.3mi total. A good warmup run after not having run for 4 days in a row, and I'll try to get some more miles the next couple days. Will be colder yet, so I'll have to stick to minimalist for a few runs.

Sunday - 1.5 mile, 1200 ft vertical climb with my telemark gear topping out at 11,000 ft. 33 min at an easy pace. My pr for this route and gear is 27 min. I plan to beat that this year. Finished the day working ski patrol.

Monday - Warming trend. 10 miles. 7 in sandals and then kicked them off finishing the last 3 bf. 9mm average pace.

Tuesday - 12 shod miles out in the field. 10mm average pace.

Wednesday - 5 shod miles. 1 mile warm up and then 4 sub 8mm.

Sunday - probably about ¾ mile swim in the decent outdoor exercise pool here where we are staying.

Monday - 1 hour barefoot on a treadmill. No signs requiring shoes at all. First time I've done that.

Tuesday - lots of barefooting, some walking and some running, up and down asphaltish trails while exploring the Oregon coast.

Wednesday - 5.4 miles barefoot on the Oregon beach at a damp 40-43°F. My feet never got warm, but they warmed up quickly and safely once back in the house. Daughter youngest ran with me, after putting me through an ab workout boot camp. On vacation no less.

5.3mi yesterday. It was brisk at 12°F/-5°F wc, so I put on my SoftStars. This time I went with my thicker soles trail model, figured might need the extra grip out on the frozen tundra. Unfortunately the problems I experienced with minimalist shoes the last couple seasons are still an issue. On the last half I started getting cramps in my arches. Hoped that problem would have gone away but must be something I'm doing wrong. The last mile I had to run almost heel striking with a loose foot so as to not put any strain on the arches to get back home. Massaging them after I was done and they were fairly sore and beat up feeling.

Last year the SoftStars seemed to be the best at avoiding this effect, however I normally ran in my thinner and wider street Dashes. Maybe the thicker trail soles, or the more cramped toes is the difference. With these temps outside I think I'll get some more time this week to test that.

Very frustrating. I know thicker soles make a big difference for me, flexible matters, too.

Hike to the edge of insanity today as husband wanted to give the girls another wilderness survival experience in exploring and not getting lost. Was "walking" in Sockwas, which sometimes meant climbing using my toes in pockets of forest compost. 2 hours. fire swamp above average.jpg fire swamp hands and knees.jpg

I have only ran a mile here and a couple miles there in the last 8 days or so...did some easy sprints and would go into a short run about 10 times a day just across a parking lot etc...

Got the 50 miler on Saturday...short time now...am feeling a mix of resolve and excitement, with a little touch of fear mixed in.

The fear part is over the 14,600 ft of elevation change...nothing is very steep on this course, but I wish I had trained more elevation changes...also, after comfortably running at 10:00 mm pace leading up to it I have decided to take my chances and not use the early start...the only reason for this is that I want a sub 12 hour 50 miler because it qualifies me for some 100 milers that I want to try.

Still though...Missing the cutoff and being pulled from the course would suck, so we'll see.

    Happy New Year everyone.

    Good luck, Steve!!

So I just finished a short 1.8 mi BF jog before some Peet's coffee and then 0.6 mi home. Didn't want to over-do it too much (by my standards, :) ) since I plan to go on the Lake Merritt Barefoot Meetup tomorrow.

So last year the left rear "foot" on my $10 thrift store treadmill developed a stress fracture. So with every step it would lean left and bounce off the frame. I had a buddy weld it back together. (Probably would have cost more in labor to repair it than I paid originally if he was billing me. It's nice to have friends!) This week, the right rear "foot" developed the same stress fracture. I had to see if he'd do it again and gladly - he did.

So I missed Wed, and Thurs because locally the windchills were WAY sub zero, but I got the treadmill re-assymbled for a 3.1 mile jaunt on Friday Morning. Followed by a quick workout on the bowflex and some core exercises with the yoga ball. Should be back to business again.

Good luck Steve! A person can tell that you experience joy in your running! With that (and some electrolytes) you will make your way through this 50 miles and the next challenge. Sending good vibes your way as you take on the challenge today!!!

10.17 miles this morning, with a temp around 12 to 13 degrees. Maybe I should have run a few more miles to say I ran more miles than degrees. Or maybe I should just go ahead and convert to metric, because I absolutely smashed the more kilometers (16+) than degrees (-10 C) mark today. Running is so much easier when you go metric.

Currently at 24.7 miles for the week, because I didn't run the two days when it was snowy and sloppy. It's been cold. I've run one day when it was around 19, another day when it was about 9 and this morning when it was around 12 to 13. That one day when I ran there was a strong wind with terrible gusts at time. One gust smacked me just as I was hitting a decent uphill and nearly brought me to a stop. That was when I figured it was a good time to pack it in once I covered the last tenth of a mile to home. Today was windy some, but nothing too bad, though my face felt rather chilly when having to run into it.

All my miles have been in wool toe socks and Xeros this week. I haven't felt daring enough to do barefoot.

I had a nice 14.3km/8.9mi yesterday. Weather was decent (no sun, but humidity fairly high). I passed an RBT (random breath testing) station along the road, and the cops had some comments about me being shoeless. They did not breath test me though :p

26.27 miles on the trail this afternoon/evening. Vivo Trail Freaks.
I actually started moaning around mile 22. It didn't last for 4 miles, but probably 2-3 minutes. I only say it because it does happen. That glorious ache....

A few pics from the day.
