Mileage Reporting 4th Week of 2013

.......................... our hotel bordered an unsavory part of town. I found what I thought was a nice asphalt bike path to run on. It was nice, but I came across a homeless camp at the rail station, that I tried to avoid, only to run right by a fella sleeping on the bike path behind a bridge column. Also passed a 24hr adult bookstore (must be very studious adults). I felt safer around the venomous snakes than in Miami.
Yep, now imagine finding yourself a middle aged white chick in a little pink run tank and cute matching running skirt, with her nice little leg sleeves coordinated to her huaraches and all topped off with the run cap and i-something, in just such a neighborhood, wondering why no one says good morning back at her. Grumpusses. Suddenly, I am a demographic.
I try to remind myself of my "tough" urban roots at those moments, but.....yeah...............snakes.....easier in their own way...............

Oh yes, I forgot to mention this run was at 4am, as I ended up sleeping quite little during the whole week due to work stress, and I needed to burn off some energy. I wore minshoes, as I wasn't familiar with the terrain. I briefly considered using the hotel gym which had two treadmills in a tiny claustrophobic room, but of course the streets were far more exciting. 4am feels quite safe in the burbs where I live (at least for a guy). However, in Miami, not so much.

a solid hour maybe more shoveling and yes all you northerners it sho nuff count. love the shoveling when i don't have to be somewhere right away
I carved sweet little paths through the 5-6" deep snow around our house/shed/garden for our kitties and humans to follow, then did the long driveway by hand (snow thrower?! for sissies!) w/ my daughter. high of about 14 degrees plenty of westerly wind today.

Oh, yeah that counts. When I was living in PA, I was fortunate enough that my apartment complex did all the snow clearing. Once the area was hit with more snow than expected (about 9 to 10") and the snow removal crew was late, thus the drive was not cleared for me to go to work. "So," I thought, "I'm in decent shape, I have a snow shovel, I'll just clear it myself." I think I cleared about one shovels-width path for a grand-total of 3 feet. "You know what?" I hypothetically asked myself, "F*%$ this," and I went inside and emailed my boss saying I'll be "working from home".

10 min warmup; 45 minute k'bells and weights (shifted up to using barbells for squats and deadlifts because I realized it was silly using K'bells for those).

Sounds tough and painful, but again I am a such a whimp.

NO SILLY WORKOUTS ALLOWED. Glad you switched and preserved dignity
Is it just my imagination, or are there more silly workouts these days than ever? Hey, let's do one-legged dumbbell presses on a Bosu ball!

No real mileage reporting for this week so far.

I got a flu shot last Wednesday when I started to feel a sleep-deprivation-induced head cold coming on. That was a mistake. By Friday the head cold was transforming into the flu. No fever or body aches, but a woozy head, hacking cough, and mild congestion. I spent most of the weekend asleep, waking up just enough to watch the NFL Championship games (semi-finals in nonAmerican-speak). Then Monday my head cleared up but I got fairly strong pain in my back and along my hammies. I thought my body might’ve tightened up due to being totally inactive for three days after my last run on Thursday. Nope. I tried stretching and stretching but it didn't help at all. My nursing student wife later explained that the pain came from my body fighting back. A hot tub and pain killers got me to sleep.

Then yesterday, Tuesday, I seemed to be recovering really quickly. Maybe it's because I was fighting a weakened version of the flu? I did a light chest and upper arms strength-training session at the end of the day. In the morning I also walked a bit more than a mile in -11 F / -23 C temps to my daughter's Discovery Club to bring her the shoes she had forgotten. Tuesday was supposed be a running day, but I figured I better not expose my running lungs to those temps for another day or two.

Today the high's going to be 10 F / -12 C, so I'm debating whether it's too soon to expose my recovering lungs to heavy outdoor breathing or if I should use my brother's treadmill. I hate treadmills, so I'll probably try a short run and see how it goes.

Don't you start doing stupid things Lee...stay put!

Six miles at noon on the indoor track. The track was quite busy today I guess the weather brought all the noon runners indoors today. It was a fun run though.

7.8 mi barefoot trail. Looked at the satellite map and saw the possibility of more trails around the university. Looks can be deceiving. After I crossed a small stream, I dove into the trail, only to make it about 30ft right into some bramble. Managed not to get too scraped up. Looks like this trail is not used. Also ventured a bit north and found a section that wasn't used, which was a bit swampy and overgrown. So, I went back to the well-worn trails.

Came across some people who were looking for their dog. Also saw some people who looked like they maybe were taking lessons from the local running store. Here's a tip: Lesson #1: Take off your shoes. Lesson #2: Run. The trail is mostly beach sand, then areas of grass, and some areas with pine needles. Barefoot nirvana!

Thanks Dama, but like the scorpion who stings the frog carrying him across the river, I can't fight my natural nature to do stupid things. So,

2.3 miles / 3.7 km
7 F / -14 C
-21 F / -30 C windchill

I debated whether it was wise to go out, but my cough was dry and very occasional, and I felt reasonably well despite only sleeping six hours, and I really couldn't bear the idea of running on my brother's treadmill, and I grew up delivering newspapers in this crap, so . . . I just had to get out. Dama will be pleased that I at least kept the distance minimal, just to be safe.

Today I'm not feeling any worse, flu-wise, so on tomorrow's run I'll try five or six miles in similar conditions. It's supposed to start warming up on Sunday. The 10k I was considering is on Saturday, but it won't be warm enough to do it barefoot and this flu-induced break has interrupted my 'training,' so no maiden race for me.

My three layers of high tech running gear--base-layer, 260 wt. merino wool turtleneck, and REI Winterflyte jacket--kept me nice and warm. I put the insoles back in the Aqua Lites and wore smartwool socks and my feet were also plenty warm while still enjoying pretty good groundfeel. Thanks again for the rec Sid!

Great to hear of everyone's adventures, keep up the good work gang!

Hi :)

Thought I'd check in and mention that we're up to 115km for the month with 9 runs so far. I started using the 'runtastic' app end of December and am really happy with it. A nice surprise was how well the GPS pick up works through a jacket pocket, so no need for an armband holder for my phone.

By 'we' of course, I mean my dog Leni and myself ;-)

Planning to really stretch our Sunday runs out to the 3-hour+ range, just haven't been doing it yet, don't really know why.

Also, been doing most of my km's in my Vivo Breathos and can't complain, yet.

That's awesome willie, what kind of dog is Leni? I want to get me a good long distance running doggie, like Leni. I used to have a Golden Retriever but long distance running was hard on him so I want to get a smaller dog.

Por supuesto chiquita. Es nuestra naturaleza, verdad que si? No preocupes. Mi mujer hace lo mismo todos los dias, y yo con ella.

Muy bien senor(picture the little wiggly thingy on top of the N) me da gusto oir que estas acostumbrado a este tratamiento.
