YAMR (Yet Another Maffetone Run)

OK, today it was +5C, which is far better than the -8C and -6C of my previous runs. Due to a pretty heavy cold and the cold weather, I had not run in 10 days -- seems like an eternity. This was like starting over on the MffR (Maffetone Run). The splits were above 14 minutes again, but based on previous experience, that should improve rapidly. I managed to stay in the HR zone for most of the 10K run, except the last big hill, and I went about 3 bpm over.

Since I am running in the aerobic zone, is it harmful to run every day?

Hi Mark,

What heartrate are you targeting at the moment. I've been trying to keep a rate of around 135 bpm which is the calculated value but I find it hard to keep it down to that level sometimes, its usually around 5 to 10 above that. Before reading his article I was running at a rate of around 150 which I still found comfortable but probably out of the fat burning zone. I guess the idea is to cover the distance and not exhaust yourself or get injured by overtraining.

Neil,

My target is 130, which is 125 +5 for the "category d". I can stay right at 130 most of the time on hills, and can stay around 125 on the flats -- unless I speed up a little.

I guess the idea is to improve the aerobic effeciency of the muscles as well as burn fat. My understanding is that this will eventually translate to speed with less effort, instead of relying on muscular strength alone -- which you build by going anaerobic. Going anaerobic breaks down the muscle, requiring time off to heal and build stronger.

I am going to run tomorrow to see how the body is responding...
