The Dutch and the Flemish speak the same languages, and nevertheless, we often use different words to say the same thing, and that can be rather confusing…
Just have a look at the words we use for different kinds of ‘moving by feet’.
In Belgium, the word we use to translate a walking pace is ‘wandelen’, or ‘stappen’.
But when I would tell my Dutch colleagues that I’m going to ‘stap’ in the weekend, they imagine me having plans to go to the pub, drink heavy…
