Dogs, cats, and all those other animals

One the most used arguments against going barefoot is that you will injure your foot on a rock, or a piece of glass. Which I usually respond by saying, "you step around the glass, or nail, or other sharp part." But, I've been wondering recently, when do you see dogs with shoes on? I've never seen a dog with shoes on, only once though on a trail, which I can kind of understand. But, I've neverheard someone saying, well your dog can't run barefoot, because he can step on glass, its interesting. Same with the hardness of surfaces, you don't ever hear anyone saying, well your dog needs cushioning when he walks on the asphalt because its manmade. I don't know, it just doesn't make sense to me.

I'm sure there are some pet podiatrists working hard on how to get pet owners to buy orthotics for their pets.

The bonus being of course that most pets have 4 feet so you can get twice as much $$$.

There must be millions of dogs and cats with foot problems just waiting to be diagnosed!

Yep, its really interesting that you mention that, the money part. I have a pair of injinji socks for wearing with my vibrams, and it said they were approved by the american podiatric medical association. So, I looked it up online the apma, and if you look at their recommended running shoes, it looks as though they just post up the companies that sponsor them. Because they have every asics thick cushioned shoe up there, but no nikes. I really think its the coporations selling this product that isn't needed and then telling us we need it, so we buy more. And it seems as though reading the apma website they are controlled by these shoes companies, and just spouting what the companies tell them.

I am so excited to find this blog entry because just this morning I ran by a big poodle wearing red& black neoprene booties! I was BF of course, and should mention that I am on break in Orange County so the weather is extremely balmy compared to the 10 inches of snow at home. Anyhoo, I stopped to take a closer look and another guy came by who looked at my feet, then the dog's paws, and we started cracking up because the dog was byfar sillier. BTW, these are the smoothest, cleaneststreets and sidewalks I've ever run on!I'm perplexed as to what that poor dog's owneris thinking, since his poodle's paws are going to lose their tough smooth dermis that we BF runner humans are so proud to develop. OY.
