Analog girl in a digital world....

It has been a few months now that my partner and I have been in our transition to BFR. Perhaps that should be natural running in my case as I don't see limiting myself to 'pure' BFR. This does bring up something that I have found noteworthy in my exploration of written material relating to BFR.

It seems to me that our little group of intrepid explorers / early adopters / rebels etc. may, at least in my view, may have fallen into the trap of what I call 'digital' thinking. That is some seem to be focused on one form or other of minimalist running being more correct than another.

Is BFR better than minimalist running? Is this just an agrument of semantics when most forms of minimalist running are commonly referred to as 'barefoot'? By extension is minimalist running better than shod running? To me it is very personal. What is best for you is best. The goal is to run, preferably with joy and even more preferaby without injury. The prevention of the latter probably has a LOT to do with realising the former.

But I digress. Ultimately for me this is about many shades of grey rather than black and white. I am thrilled that I have stumbled (pun intended) upon barefoot running. While it has already become clear that the transition process with be lengthy it is equally clear that, for me at least, the effort is warranted.

Still I do see myself running in Haraches and perhaps some other form of minimalist running shoe. I may even slide into my Asics from time to time, though I suspect Asics will not be receiving much, if any, of my hard earned money in the future. The point is here that even for me there are many answers to what form of running I practice. The answer will vary according to my changing needs, the weather (I live in the Great White North after all), my mood, etc.

Now all I have to do is keep my fingers crossed that Canada Post clears up its backlog from the strike soon so I can get my Haraches in the mail. Hopefully this will aid me in adding some distance and frequency to my runs in my quest to run my first race BF / minimalist. It is only a 1 mile bridge run that my partner(jockgirl1965) and I hope to do the first weekend of August.

Other than that event my goal is to get back to at least somewhat reqular 5K runs at a pace that is similar to my shod times. It will be interesting to see how long it takes me to get there.

Now back to waiting for the mail...;)

Stomper:

Exactly....

I tend to avoid such digital / binary people as I distrust extremism in all its forms especially perfectionists. It is not only my belief that perfection is a dangerous illusion but that there is only one colour when it comes to people, grey. I will have no truck with those that wish to live in a black and white world. As my children are oh so fond of telling me.. I am old school (ie. analog) and cheap and....

As for not caring about times... I don't see that happening... at least any time soon...lol. There is still a bit of competitive juice in my veins, though I will admit that I don't care as much as I once did. Perhaps I have growed up just a little bit over the years....

Hi Jenn,

Well, I guess, being an engineer and dealing with analog and digital for most of the week while at work it is refreshing to find that all the rules that you try to apply to barefoot running probably won't work. I always liken it to golf, you can have a perfect game one day then revert to crap the next. That is mainly in the beginning.

I couldn't understand the minimalist versus barefoot debate until I found I was getting injured using minimalist footwear and so now, from experience I would lean to learning to run with nothing on the feet first then going back to minimalist.

I say this as it stops the TMTS syndrome that afflicts everyone who takes up a new sport with zeal. Been there done that , pulled calf muscles, bruised feet, blisters, burns etc.

You have to rewire the feedback mechanism in the brain that controls the feet, legs etc and by masking it partially with minimalist shoes you will slow down the process. It really is true that the soles of your feet will stop you doing too much before you damage something.

You will never be allowed to run further or faster than the bottom of your feet will allow and that is all tied into how softly you can run.

I went for a run with a friend of mine this morning, a short 7km, fairly cold at 11C so my feet were numb so I had to rely on the good form I have learned when my feet were giving me the right signals when I ran on warmer days. I was quite pleased when my friend said that I seemed to be so light and fluid when I ran and that he was having a hard time keeping up with the pace.

So take it slow and let your feet educate you.

Cheers

I think I'm with ya in spirit. I don't like to think of trying to run through a winter here in PA without my Vibrams and huarches sound terrific, though I haven't gotten around to them yet. I also tend to think first of my Vibrams for more competetive and unseen courses.

On the other end of things, folks who've reached the cooling off and relaxing into the regular, happy running phase of BF/MR might not be energised enough to post as much as when it was all new and sparkley.

Run well and be happy!

Neil:

I hear you. In my experience, albiet limited to date, it is clear to me that going totally bare during the transition process will lead, ultimately to better results in the long term. I find it ironic that in my work (I am a somewhat professional IT geek) that digital is the norm, but with running like most everthing else I do analog is the way to go. To put it simply as my dear departed nana used to say... whatever works.

With the arrival of my hurache kit I am about to embark on the next phase of my transition. It is my hope that the use of haraches mixed with barefoot running will not only allow me to continue to progress but also allow me to increase my frequency/distance. I know this will be a delicate balance as I try to progress & not experience the dreaded TMTS.

It will be interesting to see how it goes, assuming of course the harache making is not a total disaster...lol.

Jenn
