Suddenly really sore calves

So I did a nice five miles

So I did a nice five miles yesterday, but started with a quarter mile walk. The run was mostly on a semi-frozen dirt path in the woods, so I'm not really controlling the variables very well, but my calves didn't hurt at all. The defrosting surface and my goofy dog's darting in front of me put me on my butt three times, but no damage done.

Today I'll start with a walk, then run on pavement.

It's too cold here in Maryland - for me - for barefooting (it's just making it into the 30s), so I'll be stuck in shoes for a week at least.

Here's hoping that a gentle start to my run will make the difference.
