Hi PB.
I recognised this picture from the Helsinki Olympics. The race is the 5 000 metres final. The 3 runners still on their feet finished in that order and were: Emil Zatopek (Czechoslovakia) 1st, Alain Mimoun (representing France but actually Algerian)2nd and Herbert Schade (Germany)3rd. The runner who has fallen, because his foot clipped the inside 'kerb' of the track is Chris Chataway (GB) who got up and finished 5th behind another famous British runner Gordon Pirie.
Later in those games Zatopek won the marathon in his first marathon race.
A number of these same runners competed at the following Olympics in Melbourne (1956) with somewhat different outcomes:
Alain Mimoun won the marathon, with an aging Zatopek 6th.
In the 5 000 metres, won by USSR's Vladimir Kuts, Pirie was 2nd, Chatoway 11th and Schade 12th.
In the 10 000 metres, also won by Kuts, Pirie was 8th, Schade 9th and Mimoun 12 th.
