There was an interesting sounding article in last Thursday's NYT about a scary Ultra called the Barkley Marathons, run in Tennesee. 100 miles, give or take 20 or 30, no trail marking, no GPS or cell phones allowed. Only 12 of the 800 runners who've tried it have finished within the 60 hour time limit since 1985.
The director makes it intentionally hard to run and even harder to sign up for. Registration is limited to 35 runners each year, by Park Service regs. The good news is that it only costs $1.60.
I only saw the front page of the article. The rest of the paper went elsewhere before I came across it.
Anyone know about this phantom race?
