Ultra dreams?

How do I know I have been reading to much of the ULTRAList and race reports?

This morning I awoke having freshly completed my first 100 miler only to be DQ'd, and with Gary Cantrell (aka Lazarus Lake) and his dog, Big Dog, in it you know it was a strange dream. I haven't even had the pleasure of meeting the man! It didn't seem like a nightmare at all so I guess that is a positive I can take away. I suppose the most interesting thing about it was that I haven't even entered into an ultra yet.

Has anyone else had dream about running ultras? Was the dream you had something that occured before or after actually attempting your first?

Nice dream. Now make it a reality minus the DQ. Hee.

TJ,

That sounds like a good plan... I just have to nurse this knee a little bit longer!

I have ran a 50 km last year

I have ran a 50 km last year and was lined up to complete another this year prior to it getting cancelled due to flooding and dry (forest fire) conditions. My goal is to get another 50 km under my belt prior to attempting my first 50 miler next year. Regarding dreaming of Ultras, yes I have been there often over the last 6 months including running The Canadian Death Race (125 km) in Grande Cache, Alberta and finishing without the aid of shoes. One day I hope to run it. ;-)

BG,

I appreciate your position... that said, for some reason the marathon doesn't really do anything for me conceptually. Different strokes for different folks, I suppose.

As an aside, I believe having kids and being a good parent requires some measure of sacrifice on the part of the parents and my interest in ultras might have to be sacrificed when we have children.

Some people sacrifice for

Some people sacrifice for their children, others think more about sacrificing the children...at least on some days.

For the first time ever I saw a flyer for a 50K race near here and thought "Yeah, that might just be fun!" That was a few days ago. I hope it passes.

I wish I could do an Ultra.

I wish I could do an Ultra. I am lucky to be running though so, for me my first goal is to run a half by next summer and then a full marathon summer after that. Maybe I'm giving myself to much time but I don't train like a lot of people. I just run to run because I like it and like any mileage I do, I want to be able to run it at anytime I feel relatively easily.

The longest I've ever run though is a half way back when I was in the military in Hawaii so, maybe it isn't ever relatively easy to run a full marathon. Although maybe once I get to marathon distance I will want to run an ultra, but right now a marathon seems quite a long time away for me. Good luck with getting to the ultra!

I really enjoy reading ultra

I really enjoy reading ultra race reports but i'm a long way from running one myself.

That being said, I registered for my first road marathon and a few days after registering I ran my first trail half. The trail run was challenging but after finishing I had no desire to run a road race again. I'll train and run my marathon because i already paid for it but in the future I'm more interested in trail half marathons, trail marathon, and maybe a trail 50k because if you can run 42k you can run 50. Technically a 50k qualifies as an ultra but it's nothing compared to a 50 or 100 miler

The camaradery and diversity of a trail run is half of what appeals to me when I read ultra race reports, so I think i'll stick to that for the time being. It's as close as I'll get.

And I don't think having kids means making a lot of sacrifices. We've been doing a lot more things since we have kids. Different things but great things: a lot of travels, a lot more time outdoors. I think kids need quality time with their parents and they are better off with 1 parent being 100% with them for an hour than with both parents around them but not paying full attention for a full day. I like to think of kids as a change of focus, not a sacrifice or an excuse to sit in front of TV all weekend. My 2 cents.

I hear ya! Like I said it's definitely not out of the question, it something that is steadily brewing and hope to achieve someday.

You know, I think how far I am from completing an ultra is part of what made the fact that I had that dream so interesting to me.

If any of you have just the slightest interest in running an ultra, I highly recommend volunteering to either work an aid station or crewing/pacing a runner. You'll get a chance to see the good, the bad, and the ugly aspects of the ultra world. And trust me, there is always more good than anything else.

And I'd like to add that Vanessa Runs just ran her first 50k this weekend. One of SoCals toughest races, the Noble Canyon 50k and she killed it in 7:09. Very proud of her accomplishment.

I ran it using New Balance MT101s and she ran it wearing the Vivo Ultras. Both shoes performed better than we could have hoped for. This race was a freebie for the two of us since Sport Kilt graciously sponsered us.

Congratulations guys! I

Congratulations guys! I cannot wait to read the race reports. I guess the cut on Vanessa's foot didn't slow her down much. You are both amazing.

Shacky,I plan to volunteer

Shacky,

I plan to volunteer before the end of the year. My goal at this point is to volunteer at a minimum of two events. I really wanted to work the Georgia Jewel, but have an intensive next weekend in Lexington, KY. Oh well, I am looking forward to it as we're studying environmental ethics!
