People's reactions when you run

I hate NJ beach sand for anything but surf fishing. Trying to run on it drags me down and just hurts!

You can get away with all sorts of things if you just keep running.

On the other hand, I hope to retire to become one of those guys who make a good living with a metal detector who prowl the beaches after everybody goes home in the evenings. What a life!

for my run in the city here in mexico, not df, i got a lot of stares. Dama can help out with this translation if i'm wrong. an older man saw me run by and said "asi le lleva". meaning, that's how you do it.

30 minutes swimming exercises -including walking on my hands :D

Maybe because I ran in the afternoon I got my first couple of vocal reactions.

First was from after I went running by a car that was getting ready to pull out into the road. I heard him coming up behind me, slowly, and then he said, "That looks painful." I turned and smiled, but the best I could think of was, "It's not bad!" He said, "Okay" in a dubious tone and then drove off.

Another was from a guy who often walks along the road here. He's been seeing me walk barefoot on the road, but today was the first time he saw me running. "Now you're running without shoes!?!?"

"Yup!"

I think he thinks it must be painful too. I'm guessing that must be a common impression that people have, that we're a bit crazy and we like to run with pain. If only they knew and understood....

"Barefoot and beautiful." low key comment from male Olympic runner as he passed me

:shy:
I would much rather take that than the never ending: "Now, that's hardcore." o_O

Yeah, when I passed one 24 year old woman, she began with just the exclamation, "Barefoot!" and I quickly took over the line of the conversation and said something I'm sure I've heard here, "Yeah, it's hardly fair. I don't have carry the weight of shoes." And she laughed.

Older, faster and wittier: be careful or you'll break the poor dear's spirit.

I wasn't running barefoot but when I was out for a run last night there was a kid coming the other way riding a BMX. He was sort of smirking and trying to stare me out as he rode past, until he clipped a light pole and had a spectacular crash. :)

He wasn't hurt, much. :)
That's a painful lesson for him!

I've gotten some stares, but not many comments. On Tuesday nights, there's a group that meets at a bar a few blocks from my house to do a 5K. I run down from my house, do the 5K and then run home, giving me close to 4 miles total. A month or so ago, I decided to take my shoes off when we hit a nice smooth bike path on the route, and I ended up finishing the group run barefooted. When I got back to the bar, a couple of the fast young guys saw me carrying my shoes and asked "What happened????" I think they thought I'd had a blowout of some kind. When I told them I did part of the run barefooted, they were impressed. My goal then became to do the ENTIRE run barefooted before the end of September, when they stop meeting. This past Tuesday, I ran barefooted from home, but carried my Vibrams. I ended up doing the whole run barefooted (strangely, in about exactly the same time I normally do it in shoes!). When I finished, one of the faster guys said "Well, you're not the fastest, but you're DEFINITELY the toughest!".

See? Bare feet are dangerous, you made him crash because of them. Now go put on some shoes before you really hurt one of those kids with your antics.

I made a poor lady jump out of her skin yesterday - I was running along a grassy path behind her, and I never know whether to make a little bit of noise or just run past. Her dog crouched down behind her to unload something unspeakable as I was running past, so I jokingly said "Don't turn around". She nearly screamed.

Running up 5th Avenue tonight I saw 4 or 5 guys giving out CDs, as they have been for the last couple of weeks but there must have been a new guy there as I heard "He's got no shoes on" - one of the regulars turned, saw me and said, quite nonchalant, "Oh yeah, he's always doing that." :)
