Stuck on 'the stick'

About a month ago I got moderately painful TOFP (top of the foot pain) in my left foot. At first I thought it was a stress reaction in my metatarsals, but then I re-read Jimmy Hart's piece on top-of-the-foot-pain (http://gobarefooting.wordpress.com/2010/04/21/injury-top-of-the-foot-pain/), and realized the cause might be muscle stiffness in my lower leg. So I ordered 'the stick.' I got both the 'sprinter stick', which is quite stiff:

And the 'marathon stick', which is a bit more flexible:

I haven't decided which works better for me, but I like the idea of having one in my office and one in the garage where I keep my weights and workout stuff.

I can't remember where I heard about it, but this thing has been a lifesaver for me. I now use it before a run, right afterwards, and then a few more times throughout the day. The stick massage along with a good stretching out of the foot has gotten rid of most of my top-of-the-foot-pain in less than a week. I can't recommend this simple device enough.

It's very easy to use. Just run it up and down your calves when they're in a relaxed position, like when you're sitting down, and along the outside of the front of your lower leg too (massaging the Peroneus Longus, Peroneus Brevis, and Extensor Digitorum Longus muscles--did I pronounce those correctly?), especially down towards the ankle, but not directly on the shin. It may be a bit painful on the front of the leg, but the relief it provides is worth it. I can actually feel the tension being released in my feet as I do so. You can then follow-up with some trigger point stuff using your thumb or fingers for a deeper massage, or a little foot roller/massager for the soles. I can't believe it took me a year and a half to start using one of these.

I'm a stick newbie so any tips will be appreciated.

Stifles immature laughter/giggling to respond...I have an item similar to the marathon stick, but it is 3 nubbed spheres (note my great effort not to write 'studded balls' in a discussion that I will take very south very fast) where the rings are on the stick. I use it like a rolling pin on my quads and calves, them roll my feet on it on the ground. I vary the pressure/intensity of the quad and calf work just based on how much it makes me cry...

i use a rolling pin at times. much cheaper than a stick. i also use a big black pipe for that same reason instead of a foam roller. it works a whole helluvalot better as well.

advice? find a spot that hurts and rub it out. ha! rub it out.

yes, nick is on vacation. hope he brings some of that pigs ass porter for me to try. i'm still here at home. my other vacation plans didn't happen. damn hormonal teenage girls.

I bought a stick (about 10 years ago?) and have never really used it. I even brought it with me to Taiwan, but still haven't used it.

Lol! I think I have that same "studded ball stick". Is yours purple? Curved? Are the balls interchangeable. Lol. Mine are. When I first got it, I immediately took photos of it to send to Mike to enjoy. Lol.

I use a dumbell at the gym (and a wooden rolling pin at home). I sit with my calf on the bar of the dumbbell or pin and place my other leg on top, use my hands to raise my body off the floor slightly and roll back and forth on my achilles and calf. It took a while to be able to use the dumbell or weight bar but it works like a champ.

Haha. Yes. Amazingly enough I do, Mike. You'd be surprised what I can do when I'm already on the floor. ;)

Hey Mike, I've seen you mention trigger point therapy somewhere before. Do you know of any good sites that elaborate on it? Ones dealing with TPT for the lower leg or runners would be especially helpful.

I have decided I am Mike. Hah hah hah! He'll give you this same info, anyway. I AM the one who converted him to trigger point therapy, anyway. ;)

Dr. James Stoxen is a GOD cuz he has all these great tutorials for trigger points specifically related to running. Most of them are in this blog.
http://teamdoctors.org/team-doctors-blogs/

The book I'd suggest you buy and read is
http://www.amazon.com/Trigger-Point...5&sr=8-1&keywords=claire+davies+trigger+point

I use this online chart for quick reference. http://www.triggerpointmaps.com/tp_finder.html

But if you DO want to let the immature giggling begin anew, realize that the product description says it works best with a partner:
"
Product Description

Developed as a segmental stretching device for professional athletes, the silver Sprinter is 19" long with 9 working spindles. Most rigid of the small models, it is popular when used with a partner. Featured in USA Today."

I think Lomad was right to stiffle the giggles. This one was just too easy. C'mon now, we're runners, without a little effort it's just not as much fun.

Rolling pin sounds like a good idea... rats I think I just threw out the old wooden one I had for this new marble one. What I had been using was a wine bottle with a more cylindrical profile lain flat on the floor and roll my calves back and forth over it. Not so good though for other parts other than the backside of the legs though.

o_O You gals and your devices...

Zap, I'm not going to touch that one...
