Noob Question

It's for Dr. Maffetone's method of running. Something to do with heart rate.

I'm sure, as usual, this will end up being a thread 300+ comments strong about how to do it and why to do it just like all other MAF threads I don't read. brace yourself...

The basics- run slow to build aerobic endurance base before adding faster speedwork. It's been a staple of distance runnign for years... just not always described as MAF training. Maffetone's contribution is the use of heart rate as a means of measuring workouts and progress. The idea is legit.
 
Mass Air Flow.
When your MAF Sensor goes bad in your car's engine look out, your fuel economy may be halved!
Mine was, and when you're used to using the trip meter rather than fuel gauge it can mean a training run you hadn't planned on!
