Working out barefoot is the only way for me. It helps having a home gym, since there are no issues with other people's germs. I am very careful not to keep my feet in line with any weight plates I am carrying so if I drop them, they don't land on my feet. The shoes I used to wear for workouts would provide zero protection if anything was dropped on them anyway.
I work out barefoot all the time. I don't have a home gym, but I do have dumbbells of assorted weights. Never dropped one on me. If I ever live in a place with enough room, I'd love to get a leg press, what I thought was called a rowing machine, an adductor, and an abductor. And a treadmill, if I could get a nonelectric and a foot-friendly one.
