Hello,

My name is Bryan. I am American and im 16 years old. I live in South America though.

Ive been running barefoot since I read the book, Born to Run. That was about 3 weeks ago.

Since then Ive been going barefoot on the local boardwalk, until my family had an "Intervention" with me and demanded me to stop barefoot running.

So I went out and bought myself a pair of cheap, unknown brand running shoes and cut the entire sole of the shoe. Now they look like homemade minimalist shoes. And they actually work quite good when it comes to keeping my barefoot form(landing on ball of feet instead of heel).

Some other 'hobbies' that I do, is solving the rubiks cube. I can solve the cube in under 20 seconds. I can also solve cubes of multiple layers(Ex: 4x4, 5x5).

I hope I learn a lot more about barefoot running from this forum:)

Cool dude. How long have you

Cool dude. How long have you lived in South America? Welcome to the forums. Hope you learn a lot.

Ah, quite a life change. What

Ah, quite a life change. What were your family's concerns over the barefoot running? I am not saying you should argue with your parents, but maybe as you learn more you can educate them and that might help.

It if they are open to

It if they are open to science and stuff like that there's a growing amount of research out there to check out. I believe there's a bunch in our library section on the site. Also, if they ask where you got the info, dont lie, but just say the internet and try to not mention a barefoot running specific site (I.E. BRS). Finally, Welcome!

Mainly glass and flesh eating diseases

Lol yeah its insane, but nothing compares to barefoot running.

Well, as far as the glass,

Well, as far as the glass, many of us have run barefoot without any injuries. The only glass injury I had was being barefoot in my own garage. When I run, I simply look where I'm going.

If there is flesh eating bacteria, I would think if it gets on your shoe you are just as dead. Maybe someone else here knows more about that. That is a pretty extreme concern though. In the Texas, we had a couple incidents of people swimming and getting a brain eating parasite go in their ear. So you are safer barefoot running than swimming.

Is there some sort of flesh eating bacteria down there or something?

There is actually A LOT of broken glass. Due to car robberies.(yeah sad isnt it). But its clearly visibal.

And when it comes to bacterial death, ive never heard of something like that in my life. I run on a paved marbalish boardwalk. So no worries. Well not to me atleast.

Is the glass on the boardwalk

Is the glass on the boardwalk and unavoidable? I think I'd be more worried about the car robbers than the glass.

Concerns about getting

Concerns about getting diseases from being barefoot are overblown. Board, can you elaborate for us here?

Welcome!

There is a physician and

There is a physician and athlete in Chile that is a 24/7 barefooter including his workday in a major hospital, so I doubt South America is infested with germs harmful to barefooters.

A Florida MD specialist who goes barefoot full time and races 10Ks barefoot was treating a patient for a foot infection that was possibly MRSA just this past December. In addition to the strong antibiotics he recommended barefoot time......the infection after all was caused by shoe irritation.

You are more likely to get a bacterial or fungal infection from shoe wearing ESPECIALLY while running than you are from going barefoot. It's just one of those things that people don't want to believe, but medical science backs this up.

The best way to prevent foot infections is to have strong feet that are exposed to fresh air and sunlight regularly, and to only use shoes when necessary as tools.

Parents know a lot, but much of their medical advice is baseless. (like their theories of cold-catching)

"Your crazy going swimming at the lake today, you'll be the only one there! You'll catch cold"

From who? Then again I guess many parents don't believe in the germ theory of disease.

Lol thats funny. Apparently,

Lol thats funny.

Apparently, my mom thinks she is smarter than any doctor out there, but she has never studied medicine. Ever.

Well im always barefoot. At home, if i go to a friends house, ill walk or run there barefoot and have sandals with me, so I dont get yelled at by any adult.

My mom, 76 years young now,

My mom, 76 years young now, believes we can catch a cold from being....cold. Ha! I try to tell her she is so wrong, and she seemed to have a ah-ha moment about it, then buttoned up refusing to believe she'd been wrong these many years.

Hi Bryan! Nice to meet

Hi Bryan! Nice to meet you!

Yeah. My parents think I'm crazy. But, I'm an adult now. They'll get over it. Ha!

Welcome Bryan, just be

Welcome Bryan, just be patient with your parents, they are just looking out for you the best they know how. If you keep discussing barefoot thing with them, you will eventually bring them over to the 'Dark side' or they will get sick of hearing you talk about and just give in. Either way, you win. ;-)

 Sorry, my son really wanted to add this beer icon, he is facinated with the smiley faces. see
