I got my first BFR injury today. I had a 5k this morning and I think it hit 36 degrees out over night. Well the race was just after sun up and I think starting temp was maybe 40 degrees. I knew my feet would warm up after I hit about a mile but man were they really cold until then. As soon as the race was over I was putting some shoes on to help warm up my toes. Well I saw there was something stuck to the bottom of my big toe. I tried to flick it off and I realized it was a rock and it was not on the bottom of my toe it was imbedded in my toe.

I guess my feet never really warmed up enough today because I could never feel that it was there. I got the rock out and tried to take a picture but I ended up with a really poor quality pic. I got everything washed and bandaged up. Now my poor toe really hurts.

Here is the poor quality pic from at the race and I will take another pic tonight of it now and post that one later.

Oh, and this is after the rock was out, so it is really a small bloody hole in my toe. [IMG]

UPDATE ** new pics...the first one is before I soaked my feet and the second one is after. It looks like I scuffed that entire toe up while running. I really need to buy those run amocs for winter.

    Wow, Cassie!  You didn't feel

Wow, Cassie! You didn't feel that sucker at all the whole time? I wonder how long it was in your foot, distance-wise? That's why it's so important to not run on numb feet. It's a tricky experiment, but we each have to find out what we each can handle without crossing the line and injuring ourselves. One of the things that makes me feel so alive when running barefoot is the experimenting.

Wow. I have never seen that before! Lat March I ran the Raleigh Rocks half marathon with similar conditions. I guess I was lucky I didn't have that rock incident.

I just can't see how running

I just can't see how running on numb feet is good. For me, BFR is about feedback and if I'm not getting that because I can't feel anything, then what's the point?

Miqie, Yes the feedback is a big part of it but for me I started BFR because all "normal" shoes make my feet go numb. I'm still working on finding a minimal shoe that will work for me.

    I like Barefoot Ted's phrase:

I like Barefoot Ted's phrase: "A numb foot is a dumb foot".

friend of mine is recovering from a stress fracture right now because she did a triathlon's run on numb feet.

    She's not a happy camper.

    Rug up well!

     Cassie, have you tried

Cassie, have you tried huraches? They are a good compromise for me. I ran a 5K with numb, cold feet and it was awful! Sorry about the rock....hope you can find something that works for you in between. But it is so nice that feet heal so fast, too.

Chick, I want to get a pair

Chick, I want to get a pair of the luna's but I decided to wait until spring for those. I live near Chicago so I needed something a bit warmer. I just put in my order for Run Amocs. I hope they work out for me. I really hate to put anything on at all but it looks like about the mid 40's is my limit on going BF. Now I will just be counting down the days until spring.

TJ, haha! I didn't even realize it looked like a heart until you said something. It is almost all healed up now. It was not a bad injury at all. I realize that it could have been much much worse. I think my Run Amocs will take about a week to get here so until then I only plan to run in the afternoon, after the sun has had a chance to warm up the pavement.

Hi Cassie, This is Andy in

    Hi Cassie,

This is Andy in Portland Oregon. I just recently picked up some Sports Authority Oxide Aqua Socks that work really good as a minimal shoe for winter. They are basically a neoprene vented booty connected to a thin rubber sole. There is a thin sole you can use or take out. They are really light, comfortable, and even have a drawstring on the back to adjust fit. They are only $9.99. There is nothing like barefoot but these work well for me as a minimal shoe when necessary in th Winter. Good Luck, Fast2fun :)
