I don't know... doing 100m sprints might involve some marginal 'pounding' of feet, even at ~6 min pace I do for longer runs I'm hitting a little harder than I'd like but I think they were just embellishing a little, I often say I'm going to to pound the ground or something like that, of course it's more figurative term.
