This says something about us in the west. Why is that at basically the drop of a hat ~300 barefoot runners from apparently one city and one university can show up and rip off a half mary. What have we gained over the last 100 yrs in the west and what have we lost.

What is the white material on the toes? I'm guessing tape. I'd like to find out the details of this phenom.
The white stuff would be the tape they use to keep the skin on their toes intact. Most of these runners are obviously shod runners who "took them off" just for this run, at least it seems that way from the pictures. Some obviously knew heel to toe running, and pushing off from the toes would tear up the feet and took some precautions.
