Two years and two/four months of barefoot running for me!

Two years and two four months of barefoot running for me! By Barefoot Walker Since I last posted, I have participated in a number of races. The longest ones were a 10K in Earlham on 10/20/2012 (and to which town I biked to pay the entry fee in person!) and reached my goal of 10K in under an...

    Timing Chip Preparedness Warning

Here is what I devised for this. The rubber strap was cut from an old bike tube, and was double-tied to stay on.. You can see my fall-colored painted toenails, a few abrasions from a small mishap, and some fur.

Yes, the reusable ones (which carry a $30 charge if not returned!) are what I have seen. I live in Des Moines, and most of the races I run are close by. The longest distance I have gone from here for a race thus far is around 80km, for which I drove (I also went to a charity run in Iowa City...

    Timing Chip Preparedness Warning

Thanks for the info all! Here, we use the ankle chips, which I guess are what you refer to as “D-tags”. I never have seen a bib tag yet. I presume those are figured in as part of the race entry since they are not reusable. If you ever get to a race in my area, maybe we can meet up!

    The Barefoot Criminal

Please—it’s Barefoot Walker!:) I am retired, which is why I have been barefoot almost continuously since 1997. I write that “s” word as “sh**s”. Stay barefoot all!

    The Barefoot Criminal

Oh, yes, I have had this happen, in many different places. Sometimes I win, others I lose, but seldom do the people who think it’s the law leave the encounter without being enlightened. One such incident involved a police officer telling me to leave at once because it was the law! I demanded to...

    Timing Chip Preparedness Warning

Okay, I have read this, and had a question. Does the tag always register if worn with an ankle strap? Does it have to be placed really close to the foot? Has anyone tried to attach it directly to the top of the foot using an elastic or rubber band slightly larger than a wristband, or tie a cloth...

    Grand Blue Mile

Could be. ☻ Interestingly enough, I got lots of comments on my “Smurf™” feet. I never thought of that connection until it was mentioned! I believe though that the Smurfs™ are a darker shade of blue. The next painting project I will undertake is for the Bare to Breakers where I plan to make them...

    Why aren't you wearing shoes?

I reply to the query of why I’m not wearing (or do not wear) anything on my feet thus: “For the same reason you aren’t wearing chain mail!” Then, of course, I usually have to explain what chain mail is. To the more usual question which SBL abbreviates “WAYS” (where are your sh**s?) I have two...

Refused entry to bank. How do I get a letter from the state health dept?

Never allow a business to dictate how you dress in order to spend money! If they tell you that footwear is required, your reply should be, “Why?” Try not to be belligerent, but just ask. If they say anything relating to the law, simply reply, “That’s not true, and saying so will result in a...

Anybody here members of the Society for Barefoot Living?

I have been a member of the SBL (formerly DSS) since 1997. While I rarely post there, it is a good group for support and advice on barefoot issues. I am a full-time barefooter who is very vocal on restrictions to my freedom in this regard, and they have been a big help there. So, I recommend...

    Drake Relays 6K

As I mentioned in my previous post, I ran this on 04/28. Things did not go as expected. First of all, I biked to it and arrived late. Then I was unable to find the person who had my ankle strap. I was thus just getting my tag put on my leg when the gun went off! I still had to store my gear...

    Grand Blue Mile

Thanks for the comments! Yes, it was a fast field. I could have entered the recreational division, but would have been going against walkers and kids, which seemed pointless. I did what in chess is called “playing up” or entering a division which is stronger than one’s ability, just to see how I...

    Grand Blue Mile

This is an annual event, and here are some pics. Unfortunately, there are none on the race web site yet. I finished last in the competitive division, with a 9:16, which is still a decent pace for me. I hope to get it under eight minutes by next year (I never have trained for one-miles, only 5Ks...

Bay To Breakers 2011 - San Francisco

Not sure if I should reply or start a new thread so if this is wrong, let me know and I can post it as new. I walked the Bare to Breakers (and classified myself as “bare from neck to toe”) in 2001 and 2002. This time, I plan to run it. Is anyone else intending to do it, bare-all or just...

    BRS 2012-2013 Winter Challenge

Please! Barefoot Walker.:) *gasp* I’d feel naked if I went out without a hat!;) That is, I almost never go outside without some sort of head covering regardless of what else I am wearing. If you saw some of my other videos, you will notice that I also cover my hands when shoveling except in...

    BRS 2012-2013 Winter Challenge

Darn! I was unaware of this challenge, but I did a lot of running, walking, and snow shoveling in this time frame, including: Many workouts, nearly daily until November, when I cut back; Several races: a 5K, a 10K, two through woods (RCC Run the Woods and Sycamore 8 though the latter was in 10℃...
