I'm struck. Running has always helped provide this balance for me, particularly once I left the Army and stopped spending a great deal of time in active work outdoors. It still does the same for me, and BF enhances the experience even further.

I agree Phil. I was in the same boat after leaving the Army so I took up cycling so that I could be outdoors more.

I was talking to my wife about this subject a week ago or so and was saying now a days, people look and see what others have and wisht they had it and they feel slighted for not having it and can't be happy with what they do have. They often don't see that they are much richer in other ways. After being in Afghanistan for a year and seeing how happy people can be, even without the small things in life, instills this thought even more in my mind. We in the US are spoiled and can't seem to find the happiness in the small things it seems anymore.

Yep, that sounds like me. I'm at university in a big city and when I go home I definitely notice a huge lift in my mood.

Something about being surrounded by green or being in a forest settles me immeasurably, and running in those places is just a peaceful double whammy!
