Wanted: book reviewers. And yes this means you.

You can tell that barefoot and "natural" running is getting big from the sheer number of books being published about it.

I've gotten curious, what the heck are all these books saying about this thing that we do? Are they giving good advice, and are they otherwise worth reading?

Accordingly, I'm organizing a coordinated collection of reviews of the most relevant books published this year or last. I'd like to get one or more of you to review each one, in whatever detail you'd like, and I'll post the reviews and sum up the reactions in a special new section of the Library.

You absolutely do not need to be an expert barefoot or minimalist runner to be a reviewer. You just need to be willing to read the book all the way through and give it an honest appraisal from your point of view. And, once we establish a deadline (probably sometime in late April or early May) you'll have to turn in your review by the deadline.

Please contact me via email at xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx if you would like to be a reviewer for one or more of the following books:
I will acquire several copies of each book, some perhaps even ahead of official release dates. If you're approved as a reviewer, I'll mail the book(s) to you. Then the whole world will hang on tenterhooks, waiting to hear what you have to say.

Thanks!

I would be willing to review

I would be willing to review the books I've read, but I don't want a free copy to review. I'm always a little skeptical of reviews on things that are given away. If I pay for a book, I feel at complete liberty to honestly review that book, same with any other item.

As soon as I'm given something, then I find it harder to honestly evaluate it.

I already own a copy of

I already own a copy of Michael Sandlers book, have read it through twice, and would be willing to read it again and review it for you. I can drop you an email if you need me to.

Hopefully it will be a book share concept and you won't actually get to keep the book. I'm going to be honest though regardless, so keep that in mind Stomper. Well maybe Jason will get a little leeway since I like him so much.

We want you guys to be

We want you guys to be honest, no matter how you get the book.

Hey, thanks to the half dozen

Hey, thanks to the half dozen or more people who have already emailed me. And you too, Abide, Matt, Smelph, I know you guys will be great members of the review team, once you email me. There will be too many communications about this to handle using the internal BRS messaging system so that's why I want to make a little email list.

Matt, I know you strike a principaled stance, but for book reviews it's a standard part of the publication business to send out free review copies. So don't worry about it; publishers are not expecting any quid quo pro. Of course anybody who wants can buy their own copies. We may be able to do a bit of book sharing using the US Mail as well.

And yes, making an honest appraisal is the most important thing, whether good or bad or (this is the most common) "mixed". Whatever you write, it just has to be based on a thorough examination of the book.

I'll send out some really simple guidelines within a day or two. Cheers!

Good points. I just sent you a message, and I would like to participate.

I emailed...  but I want to

I emailed... but I want to comment... Dad is on the Jewish Book Council.. when they do the book awards every year he gets a ton of books in whichever category he is in charge of the voting on (multiple copies of each) to share with his committee.. they pass them around and read them... (I have been on the committee some years in the past- sometimes with him and sometimes another one), and the first round some of them get knocked out right away because the 2-3 reviewers that have them all feel they either don't fit the category or are poorly written.. then the books get handed off to others.. and more get culled until the winning books and the top 5-10 have been read by everyone.. at the end people keep the books... the free books are standard practice.. whether the reviews are good or bad..

So I have no issue with free books either to pass around a group or to keep. Honestly in this setting, I think we may want to consider passing them around some unless there are more than one copy so more than one person reviews each one.

Hey, thanks for the many many

Hey, thanks for the many many responses. I am going to shut off comments here in this thread and send all of you (who emailed me) an email about how to progress by the end of the weekend. Cheers, Stomper.
