Hi there! Signing in from the northeast Atlanta Metro... I "ran" track in high school back in the early 90's and haven't touched the sport since. Been an avid walker for years, found a pair of new balance Minimus 10 multisport shoes at Nordstrom rack, gave them a shot, and loved them for walking. Signed up for a 5k (which is next weekend) and the rest is history, I'm hooked. I may never go barefoot, but these shoes have changed the way I view running. I don't hate it! I had severe foot/knee pain when I ran in the past, which is why I pretty much dropped it altogether.

Any advice for a newbie? I'm already searching for a deal on my next pair of shoes :)

Please join me in the Georgia Chapter, Chapters link above. I live in the Metro Atlanta area too.

It's very possibly that the foot and knee pain you experienced before was caused by the shoes you were running in. If you start feeling pain again, consider kicking off the shoes and giving barefoot a try. You will LOVE it!

Welcome!

Thanks for the welcome! I am currently researching road shoes on the advice of a friend who has been minimalist running for a while now. So much to learn.....

gm - welcome to the crew. TJ already gave the best advice - go slowly and gradually to allow your feet and legs to adjust to minimal/BF running. The next best advice is to go BF, particularly at first. Doing so will help you cement good form into muscle memory from the start. Shoes will always prevent you from feeling all you need to feel to learn proper BF form. They can also lull you into thinking you can go faster and further than you safely can, often resulting in injury early on. It happened to me (left foot stress fracture); don't let it happen to you.

Welcome. And echoing others, try skin-to-ground barefoot -- just a little. :) SO FUN!!

I personally run bare, but I like Lee Saxby, as he presents his recommendations using a structured approach. He also assumes that you'll be using minshoes.

I would also say that after a year or two, that I had to get rid of all of my old shoes, since they no longer fit comfortably. On the other hand, I won't be needing bunion surgery, so that's more than fair.

I did't think I'd run so much barefoot at first, either. Now, I'm addicted to it and having fun increasing the roughness of the surface and my overall mileage. Adding the maximum aerobic function training approach is a perfect complement to it.
