Becoming a tech whore

Well, ya know, it's not like you won't wear the clothes. When you think about it, you're going to spend a fair amount of time in these clothes, so it's a good idea to buy something that is going to be both durable and comfortable.

Check out Sierra Trading Post around February or March. I typically buy my winter running gear in the spring and my summer running gear in the fall.
Yah, that's one of the first things I taught my wife about US commerce when we arrived Stateside; always buy during clearance. And I thought about waiting until after Christmas, when prices might already start to come down. But with REI and Amazon's great return policy, I can always bring this stuff back next week if I don't like it, and I got to justify four of the purchases as Christmas presents.
Sick? That is what you get for being a idiot, who in his right mind would be barefeet in the middle of winter outside. :D Well, that is the story I got from the wife while complaining about my flu bug the last couple of weeks. :)
Explain to her that viruses cause colds. My wife also subscribes to the cold feet theory of disease, at least for our kids, but our son got sick first, and I've been trying to get by on 4-5 hours of sleep for weeks now, so she let me off the hook this time.

Well, I kept the polyester base layer I got at REI ...............................................
http://www.rei.com/product/778291/rei-oxt-tech-long-sleeve-t-shirt-mens
That's about $250 in order to run less sweaty in sub-freezing temps ..........................

Most of that stuff should last years!
Amortise the cost over 7 or 8 years and it's a very modest investment for greatly improved comfort - enjoy!
I'm still running in tights I've had for 8 years and my favourite cold weather jacket is 15 years old and still going strong!
I buy this kind of stuff for my living so I could get new every year at low, or no, cost but I'm very happy with what I have so I don't bother.

Yeah, I just had to retire 3 pairs of 10 year old tights.

My wife tried pulling that stuff with me at first, but then she started noticing how she gets sick much more frequently than I. I am home with our son all day and when he is sick I typically don't get sick. My wife on the other hand, usually gets sick within a couple days afterwards. She's stopped giving me grief about it because I've somehow stopped getting sick as often as I used to, and she still gets sick at the same rate as she always has.

My go to winter running jacket is going on 12 years old. I bought a replacement 2 years ago but it is still hanging in the closet with tags on. Tights last forever for me, only time they worn is in the winter, and usually as a baselayer under wind pants. Like Chris said, this kind of stuff lasts a long time, you will get your moneys worth out of you investment in tech gear.

I've been looking for a nice running jacket and running pants for some time....Just cant justify the buy yet.
I am comfortable in an old wind breaker I have and some warm-up pants from my wrestling days.
I look like a clown....but.....I gave up that whole looking cool while running things once I went BF :p

of course it would be nice to get back from a run and not be supper sticky sweaty nasty....Its amazing how fast my running clothes get stinky in the winter.

+1

This stuff can definitely last for years. I still have my 15yo Asics Gelanots jacket. The thin delicate breathable membrane of the stowable hood ripped, but I was able to patch that with tent seam sealant. I still keep that jacket in the car if I get caught in a passing FL thunderstorm. There are better fabrics now.

Yeah, when people are about to start running and ask me what they should wear, I tell them they can get started with whatever comfy clothes they have around the house, or they can go pick up some cheepie Soffee or Russell Athletic stuff for $10. But, if they make it 6 months, that stuff will wear out. So they might as well pick up something nicer.

My husband is a big fan of running in Ranger Panties (if you don't know what they are, you CAN google this. They are running shorts). They are dirt cheap, but his Ranger Panties only last a few months before he needs to replace them.

I really like those myself but had no idea where to get them. Just found them online for 9.74. Now I gotta get me some. Ranger Panties that is.

Plus REI offers house brand equivalents of most of the gear for 20-30 percent less than the main brands.
I do like REI. Been a membership since the 90's. Though, no stores in FL at all! Nearest is in Atlanta, 6 hrs away. I can't say that they have house brand equivalents of everything though. Of course, one can run in any jacket. It just might not work as well as a sport specific one.

Anyway, I tried the combo on my run at 41F and 14mph wind. It worked well for those conditions.
long sleeve baselayer and jacket(cheaper at Amazon)

Feet were cold, so I kept everything zipped up until the end. Sweat through the baselayer and jacket was damp. Was doing laundry anyway, so I tossed it in, too. It was pretty much dry by last night. Completely dry now, this morning.

It looks like the jacket is on sale at Amazon. 25% Off Pearl iZumi Athletic Clothing: Now thru Dec 23rd

Going to try again today, forecast 36F with 4mph. Feeling a bit lazy, but I'll go and call it product testing!
