Up and Down

So my weekly mileage has taken a distinct upturn -thanks to trail runs. This is the way I like to increase my mileage -more or less by accident. My legs are rarely sore after running, though the last trail run I did, they were unusually sore. It was only about a mile longer than the last ones we did. We must have gone up and down more hills this time.

Speaking of hills...I suck at going down hills on trails, especially when it is unusually wet. When I try to relax as I go down them I am overcome by anxiety that I will slip and fall on my ass -which then causes me to push back as I go down them, which then causes me to get sore calves. Not like shin-splinty pain, but just distinctly sore.My two greatest fears are of cracking/breaking my tailbone, or my clavicle. In my opinion those are the two worst breakages you could have.

I would like to do trail runs more than once a week, but my schedule is not very conducive to that.

I am trying to toughen up my feet, I haveonly ran on the trails barefoot twicethiswinter and both times I regretted it -thanks stupid gravel. On my last trail run, it took me a full 24 hours before Icould put normal pressure on my souls. So rather than let them heal fully I have now started going barefoot in my daily activities a lot more and am now making it a point to walk around on super bad pavement for 10 minutes a day. Might even walk around on the LARGE gravel in my parking lot as well as the rocky former train trestle above my parking lot. In the summer, I was able to run barefoot on pavement without a problem, my soles have just gotten soft since winter began and I've been barefoot a lot less.

However, I would really, really like to run barefoot in my next race, which is February 19th -which is onpavementthat, in my opinion, sucks.

Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.
