We had some snow - just a dusting - over the weekend, and temperatures got down into the teens. So when I went out for my run from work yesterday, I had my first encounter with salt. The sidewalks were covered with it. Big nasty chunks.
I never paid attention to the stuff before. Now I loathe it. It seemed to be there just to hamper me. It certainly wasn't melting any snow or ice, which had long since sublimated.
Is this the end? Will I be able to run with this stuff? I found that it is not as bad as it looks. I could run through it, for the most part. Just a mile of it would be tolerable. But it is everywhere and unavoidable. And after a few miles of painful steps, I just wanted to quit. And I am not so sure about the health effects. I suppose it is just salt, which the ocean is full of. So that is okay, right?
Rats. I feel like I have come to a crossroads with civilization, and civilization has the right of way.
An Update:
I picked a route today that had no salt. I was pretty excited to get out there, and ended up having a great run. Still, wondering about the future. Any thoughts on running on salt?
