A new fossil discovery is suggesting that Australopithecus afarensis ("Lucy's" species) had an arched foot--unlike modern apes who have flat feet. The arch really helps with walking and running. I think it's pretty neat that such an important part of our foot's anatomy had already developed in our ancestors over 3 million years ago.
I once heard a podiatrist say that arches were left over from when our feet gripped like hands. That made so mad, I totally did a spit-take when I read that bull!
Lucy probably stood on 2 feet, didn't she? So cool, so human!
