Shoe selection high school track athlete

Any advice on selecting shoes for a high school track and cross country athlete? My son needs new running shoes for track and he has always worn traditional shoes. I'm considering whether to get him more minimalist shoes.
My first thought is why mess with something that's working. I'm also concerned that he may get injured if he looses the support without a slow transition and I can't see him taking it slow.

Unless he's going to take some time off from training, my advice would be to slowly add small amounts of barefoot running, either on days off or after workouts. (When I say small, I mean 1/4 mile, then 1/2 mile, etc. You don't want to be doing speed work on sore calves.)
