It started with some soreness on the medial side of my right knee. The exact location seems to be at the top medial-posterior end of the tibia. There's a tendon and a little muscle right there that if I sort of palpate with my fingers back and forth I can feel it slide over the bone or another tendon. I can do the same on the other leg but that's not sore. The sore side might be swollen slightly. Sometimes while standing I can feel it slide over the bone/tendon when my leg goes from straight to slightly bent. Pain level for that is pretty low, more of a discomfort but if I haven't iced it for a while it can be pretty tender to the touch, 5-6 out of 10.
A few days to a week after that I started getting what seemes like bursitis in that knee--pressure seems to build up if leg is bent for too long and it pops when straightened. If I then bend and straighten the leg repeatedly the pop lessens each time and feels better after 5-10 bends.
This came about 2 weeks after I started running after taking a month off. I did 6 runs of about 3-3.5 miles, including 3 actually barefoot during that warm week we had. I'm trying to figure out what caused this. I didn't have any knee problems all last summer/fall, my first year running BF/minimal. Did I start out after my month off with too much mileage? Usually bursitis is from kneeling, right? Did the tendon problem trigger the bursitis? Why did the tendon get sore? If this is bursitis now it seems more acute than what I had 25-30 years ago.
I've been icing it 3-4 times a day for about 4-5 days now, not running and trying not to walk/stand too much on it which aggravates it. The only other unusual thing I had been doing was cutting up a tree into 3 ft length and rolling/pushing-with-my-feet the logs down an incline towards the road. It's possible the tendon got bumped but there was no scrape or bruise and I don't remember anything like that.
Thanks for any advice you can give.
