capoeira can be divided in 2 schools (or maybe more, I dont know) : Regional and Angola. Angola students always play and train with shoes, when Regional dont. The shoes, as you know, are not so useful, but were forbidden to slaves. As a symbol, Angola capoeirist decided to wear it. The author, from Regional prefers the idea that she comes from Africa, a Barefoot Land and want to be in contact with the ground, nature.
