If you tell someone “I hope you get what’s coming to you” (or it's cousin "I hope you get what you deserve") it’s always construed as a negative comment, never positive. It’s like everyone has a guilty conscience and is just waiting to get caught.

My favorite that no one ever gets as being backhanded, but should be "why, I feel just the same way about you as I always have....."

And you can obfuscate yours to "and I don't think you are getting all that you have worked so hard for...."

Not negative at all. In fact, it's rather pragmatic...
