Art lovers

Well, you asked for it....I'm pretty sure pole dancing can be considered an art, so there's my vote.

Mandy, I'd love to go to art school if just for myself. I've always loved art but was never very good. I'd love to be able to paint nature scenes better and capture the awe of some of the places I have hiked in the mountains. Architecture and design I was good at, but when it came to non-straight lines I always struggled. Never could do people or faces well (or more accurately not at all). So I don't suppose I have any good advice other than congrats and hope you do well. Sounds like its something you'll enjoy.

Thanks for the post Mandy! I am an artist too and make mobiles, carve non functional wooden spoons and do a little rock carving as well. I spent a week in NYC recently and was lucky enough to go to MOMA. 3 dimensional art is usually what I spend the most time in front of.

Do you have any photos of your work to share?

I don't consider myself an artist, because I can't paint or draw to save my life, but I used to love carving things out of wood. I still would, I just don't have the time anymore. I love building stuff with my hands as well. Something very satisfying about it. I also used to use a wood lathe to carve wood stuff too. Someday I will have my own wood shop again...

I'm a bullsh!t artist....Otherwise, I have always admired sculpture (both the classics and modern. This Guy is a favorite: http://thetyee.ca/gallery/2006/01/25/BrianJungen/index.html . I like his repurposing of objects.). I always wanted to paint, but wasn't very good at it, I dig Picasso, and many of the impressionist painters. Matisse and Klipmt are pretty dope, too. I find furniture making to be an art, and once I finish my Master's and get a job I hope to clear space in the garage to try my hand a it. My dad's got skills in that department so I'm going to learn a bit from him; I want to build a custom sofa for my weird living room...

Lomad, I think the proper term for that is "Stand-Up Philosopher"...

As for me, I fall in to the "I don't know a lot about art, but I know what I like" group; there is no one medium that I particularly favor over another. It all depends on some unquantifiable visceral feeling that it generates - so it can be a sculpture, or moderne art or an oil painting. A couple of months ago, I went to SF MOMA and they had a display of items by Deiter Rams (the guy who designed a lot of items for Braun) and I loved it...up to that point, I never would have considered industrial design as "art", but there you go...

All that said, I do tend to cast a more critical eye on "modern art". It's true that some of it generates the aforementioned visceral feeling, but the bulk of it generates the "Umm...OK...and you got paid for that?" feeling.

Lomad-I'm a traditional portrait artist. I like art that doesn't need to be explained to the viewer.
I dig traditional realism, too. I loved walking through the National Portrait Gallery last time I was in DC. You make an interesting point about explanation. I don't think I've ever sought an explanation for a piece of artwork; i like to have my own reactions and thoughts (I can imagine lots of others do ask, though). But, I can see how, as an artist, you could tire of being asked 20 questions every time you put something out there. Any photos of your wirk you could share with us?

Mandy,

I am a portrait artist as well. Here are some with graphite, charcoal and charcoal and pastel. I'd love to see some of yours! I don't meet many portrait artists! George Michael.jpgDr M.jpg 31957_1410036645650_1074481370_1185657_1847632_a.jpg

Wow Jen, you are truly talented. I'm jealous of people like you.:barefoot:
I'm jealous of people like me too! :) It's my mom's fault. She is a naturally talented artist. She can do everything EXCEPT faces, and faces are the only thing I have a natural talent for. And Nick, you are a talented writer, so I'm sure plenty of people are jealous of you. :)
