Hi!
I've been running bf since last june and am running about 45ish miles per month right now, with runs between 5-7 miles 3x week or so. I've been having some strange soreness/pain on the outer edge of my right foot, midway between the ball and heel. I cannot pinpoint the pain or press on it to elicit pain, but I notice it when running (and rarely, walking). It's not so much pain as a dull soreness, and is not debilitating or cringeworthy and doesn't stop me from running, although I've taken a week off a couple of times to see if it would disappear, to no avail.
I'm just not sure what to make of it, and if it is an impending stress fracture or something like that. I'm sure it's not a bruise. I'm looking forward to any thoughts or similar experiences!

Sounds like a peroneus muscle weakness. Start by looking for trigger points up by your fibula head - that's the bone that stick out on the outside of your lower leg, just below your knee running down to your ankle. Your 3 peroneus muscles start there and then end at various points in your foot (two on the outside and one - the longus - under your big toe). You're having a supination-type problem and it's usually from those muscles. So start there and work your way down the outside of the lower leg, working out any sore spots with your fingers.

Actually I assumed it was on the bottom of your foot. You're putting more pressure on the outside because you're not properly pronating towards the inside towards your big toe when you run.

Awesome, thanks again for your response. I'm encouraged that it's not a stress fracture or something, which we're all afraid of here! I'll see what I can do to correct it. Are there any specific exercises or stretches that will strengthen that muscle?

How dare you mention the 'stretching' word to me. Ouch. :) And I never said you didn't have a stress fracture. Impossible for me to diagnose that on-line.

Of course, I understand, but what you assessed is more in line with my symptoms, I think. From what I've gathered the best thing I can do is try to strengthen my ankles through standing on one foot, using a bosu ball, etc. I do appreciate your non-diagnosis opinion! :)

Correct and you're welcome. And those are all good ways to strengthen the muscle AFTER you work out the trigger points.
