Has anyone run this to know what the terrain is like and how friendly it is? I know a lot of it is fire roads, which here normally indicate huge boulders which aren't really all that comfortable to land on. If I don't do something stupid between now and May I want to run a 50 miler, and this is timed pretty nicely for a training run.

I'd sort of like to do a 50k in huraches. I think it would be fun, but I also don't want to end up screwing over my feet for the 50miler which I'll probably be doing in my minimuses if I dont find some more awesome shoe between now and then.

Any thoughts?

I've done the 25k twice now

I've done the 25k twice now and am planning on running the 50k in 2012. The 50k is actually just the 25k route done 2x.

The first year I ran it was in conventional shoes and it was my first trail run. Needless to say, I was sucking wind pretty hard. Ended up getting really lost and tried (and failed) to hitchhike back to the start. Not a good start to my trail running career.

The 2nd year I did it was a bit more interesting. It had poured the day before and the trails were muddy and wet. I wore Vibram Classics and it was all I can do to keep the mud from sucking them off my feet. Had a lot more fun this time around.

As far as running this trail in minimalist shoes, I wouldn't say it's overly difficult as long as you have some experience, can avoid some rocks, and are ok with elevation, both up and down. The only part I had issues with was the steep downhill portion since I had to dance my way around rocks (and deep mud), while the conventional shoe wearers just hammered down it.

I think it could easily be done in huaraches as long as the trail is fairly dry. Just be aware that there is a creek crossing and you will be getting wet.

Thanks ShackyI was aware of

Thanks Shacky

I was aware of the multiple loop thing. I figured if nothing else I could run the first lap in huaraches and switch to the minimus in between. I won't be doing this for any sort of time if I do do it. It'll just be for training and keeping my friend company. Yeah if its muddy I won't do it in huaraches at all. I hate them in mud.

The elevation and distance isn't an issue at all. I ran the Cuyamaca 50K and I'm pretty sure that was worse. Although I think you ran both so you might know better. At least it shouldn't be 95 degrees :-S)

I got lost up near that area too actually. It was a horrible experience. I ended up getting forced (not that they had to try that hard) into accepting a ride back with some road workers because I looked so bad off I'm pretty sure their supervisor thought I was going to die when he told me I had another 4 miles to go. I was just out by myself though, not in a race. That was the day I learned to carry money with me for a taxi :-D.

What did you wear for

What did you wear for Cuyamaca? I wore the original Lunas and didn't have much of an issue with them. I stubbed my toe on that rocky gully climb section (2nd peak I think?) and bled quite a bit. Wasn't that big of an issue though.

That race was a nice challenge, especially since I had just returned from an injury. Looking forward to doing it again next year. Should be fun having Vanessa run it to see the look on her face on the climb up the 3rd peak.

I wore the new balances. My

I wore the new balances. My feet were pretty sore by the end of it actually. I would have enjoyed the challenge a lot more if not for the heat. The route itself was awesome. I started in the hour early group even, but by the end me and the guy I ran it all with both pretty much just threw up our hands because of the weather and death marched it in. I did think it was a much more fun route than the other 50k I did though. The trails were far more exciting to run since you had to actually move around rocks a bit and it wasn't all just fire roads.

If you've been following

If you've been following PCTR, you should have noticed that they've fallen on some rough times and have scrapped quite a few of their races lately. Well the good news is that they just announced that Malibu Creek 2012 is on and registration is now open.

Yeah I've noticed that from

Yeah I've noticed that from their facebook updates. Sadly I hurt my knee pretty bad doing some long hiking adventures (apparently hiking is not the same as running) so I'm pretty much back at square one. I can run about 4 miles at a time before it hurts, so no malibu for me. I was really looking forward to it too since that area is gorgeous and the campground there is super nice too.
