Hello all. I've been trying barefoot running/walking for just under a month now. I would like to wear some kind of minimalist shoe at work but can't really afford many of them. The vibrams I already own are out due to working in dialysis and having nasty chemicals and bodily fluid landing on my feet all the time. I was wondering if a cheap pair of faded glory shoes might be a ok substitute while at work. I know the sole is a bit on the thick side but looking at them in the store they have no heel drop that I can see and the toe spring not very noticible. What say you good people?

Bill usually every shoe that isn't minimalist will have heel drop, thick padding, and arch support. I know that minimalist shoes are quite expensive ($80-$130) but they have far more benefits then a pair of shoes that aren't minimalist. To be honest I don't think toe spring is such a pain, I have the New Balance Minimus and it has a little spring in it but not very noticeable. I would invest in a good pair of Merralls, NBs, or Vivos.

I'm not sure what the Faded

I'm not sure what the Faded Glory shoes look like. Are they water shoes? That would be a good shoe to go with for work. Can you cover your shoes with those shoe covers you medical people wear in the hosptials? :)

They pretty much look like

They pretty much look like the so called normal shoes. They aren't water shoes either. I found them at walmart for $15 (marked down from $25) so you can see the attraction for me over the higher priced minimalist shoes. I do wear shoe covers almost all day. They always remind my of bounce dryer sheets. Funny thing about them is we are required to wear nonslip shoe covers but the box they come in states there is a risk of slipping. I think i'm the only one there that seems to have noticed this.

Hey Bill, I can appreciate

Hey Bill,

I can appreciate the need to adapt existing platforms to minimalist or zero drop shoes. One of the things that works well for this project is to get light sneaker shoes (I used a pair of Macbeths I found on sale) and remove or modify the insole. Most of these shoes are zero drop without the insole and give pretty good ground feel with them gone. One my macbeths I wanted to preserve the washable insole so I looked at it and realized it was a bicomponent insole (many cheap insoles are). There was the main platform that my foot rested on and then a second glued-on layer that raised the heel. I just peeled this second layer off. While I dont know if this will work with the Faded Glorys I would say that it is worth a shot.

Hey Bill,I also work in

Hey Bill,

I also work in dialysis, and have for the last 5 years. I have wore my Merrells a few times, but they are somewhat expensive. I know what your saying about all the chemicals and fluids, (renalin, dialysate, blood, bleach, vinear... to name a few), therefore you may want something more fluid resistant. I have thought about wearing my water shoes,(Walmart for $7), with the insoles pulled out, and some of the medical booties.

The company I work for had a

The company I work for had a innovation conference a few weeks ago, where cutting edge technology and ideas were shared between divisions through presentations and poster displays. In the morning the first speaker was an executive VP who is well respected and responsible for introducing a technology which is key to the company's growth. He told the story of how he often wears socks at work, even during presentations to outside parties. I once rode the elevator with the VP and asked him why he goes shoeless. He said it was because people work better when they are comfortable. My boss used to jokingly give me a hard time about wearing socks, but after the VP's speech he commented that I was in good company with the sock thing. I am waiting for more of my co-workers to follow suit and ditch their dress shoes.
