In “A New Health Practice Is Born: Looking Back to When Runners Were Weird, Unhealthy, and Unproductive,” I wrote about the early tensions between doctors and runners in the 1960s and ’70s. I ended with the following:

What began as a way to delay or avoid heart disease became the first health practice people turned to.
In other words, today in America, running is a perfectly normal and healthy behavior.
And it is…unless you take your shoes off.
