It is a good feeling to finally develop a sense of what you are really capable of!8 km @ 6:05 min/km
It rained last night so I (purposely) found some muddy city trails on my way
BTW, on my last 3-4 runs I stopped carrying my sneakers around in my hand. It was about time, honestly
I guess I finally feel confident enough.
Hmm I wonder if this is more true for longer distances (like what ultra runners do). I haven't noticed loss of muscle mass but my training is all over the mark. Still though I try to do weekly long runs in the 10-20 mile range, though much over 1/2 marathon distance is often only had during mid spring through fall. Yvonne is pretty ripped and we do most of our long runs together, and she often gets more weekly miles in too since my shift work schedule gets in the way. I'm sure you loose some fat and get leaner, but that's not the same thing and desirable!Another barefoot runner friend of mine keeps telling me I'm going to lose muscle mass from running long distances, but I haven't seen it happen in the past 2-3 years. Besides, all my weight lifting, swimming, and gardening has got to be helping keep up that sort of strength. As evidence, I cite the unintentional busting of another spading fork last week...
Ahh, you were still in that stage. It is a nice feeling to finally 'let go'.BTW, on my last 3-4 runs I stopped carrying my sneakers around in my hand. It was about time, honestly

Sorry about the toe! Hope it heals up good and quick and nothing broken or strained to bad. Impressive mileage though, even the cut 'short' at 21+ miles! training for something in particular or just felt like doing such a long run for the heck of it? Been since last summer that I have been over 20, if I ever even did over 20 last year ,I can't remember, and now I think of it I probably didn't since I didn't do a marathon last year. I've got to get back at it though since I committed to a full this fall already.21.25 miles today, barefoot.
Mashed my little to on a rock at mile 17 and had to bail on my planned 50k. Could still run to the nearest town that was thankfully only 4 miles away. It's swollen and bruised but I don't think it's anything serious.

On a plus my soles held up well on some quite gnarly terrain, I shall wear minimal footwear in the future on these trails though, lesson learned. The annoying thing is I felt really good and could have easily managed another 10miles. Doh.
That sounds so nice! That will provide me with 28 miles of continuous paved rail trail that starts 5 miles from my house. At the end of that a short mile or less through a small town and another 12 miles of rail trail continue after that too.

This seems to be a drawback on really long barefoot trail runs...late in the run when you get tired and your running form gets sloppy a bit the risk factor for the toes goes way up...just something i have noticed and you really have to be focused in the later part of the long runs to determine the right time to switch to min-shod.
