Timing: (New in 2012)
A disposable timing chip will be attached to the back of each person’s race bib. Please do not remove or fold the timing chip. The timing company will send out text messages as well as emails a few hours after the race with runners times. When you register please be sure to include your cell phone number and email address.

COURSE
The race course is a 5 kilometer off-road roller coaster on well-maintained XC trails that twist, turn, and roll their way through forests and past pastoral, working farmland. The trails are level, wide (12′), and non-technical with no roots or rocks, but very hilly. Although there are no major climbs the rolling terrain is unrelenting. The surface of the trails is mainly grass and dirt sprinkled with pine needles, pine cones, twigs, and small stones.

DIVISIONS
This year we are eliminating the “shod” division of the barefoot race, now that minimalist footwear has made it into the mainstream of the running world it’s much harder to define what is truly a minimalist shoe. So if you want to run with shoes on then join the regular 5k (or any of the other events), but if you want a real barefoot race then this is the one for you.

AID STATION
Barefooters will pass by an aid stations twice on the course. The aid station will be stocked with cold water and Cytomax electrolyte drink. Please dispose of all cups and wrappers in the garbage barrels supplied at the aid station. Anyone caught littering by throwing anything in a field or on the trail away from an aid station will be disqualified from the race!

PORTABLE TOILETS
There will be portable toilets on the course near the aid station and at the start/finish line.

SHIRTS
In 2011 we lowered the entry fee for all races, and charged for race shirts separately. That is because some people already have enough shirts in their closets and we think people should have the freedom to choose. We also take a great deal of pride in the quality and design of our shirts. Our short sleeve technical race shirts are made by Merrell. We offer both mens and womens sizes. There are 4 different designs associated with different races: 1) 5k & 10k races, 2) 5k Canicross, 3) Barefoot 5k, and 4) 25k, 50k, and 50mile races. If you order a shirt you will receive one with the design associated with your race. If you register for more than one race please be sure to order two shirts. You must order your shirts by 5/5/12 to be guaranteed a specific size. At registration you will be given the size that you ordered. Substitutes will only be allowed after the race if there are extra shirts available . If you do not claim your shirt before the race starts it may be given to another person. You may request a refund if you did not claim your shirt or if we don’t have the size that you originally ordered.

Shirts will be distributed at packet pickup at the following times:

Friday, May26th 1:00pm to 6:00pm at the Maine Running Company Store located at 563 Forest Ave in Portland, Maine

Saturday May 27th 8:30am to 11:00am at Pineland Farms

FINISHERS PRIZE
All Barefoot 5k finishers will receive a Pineland Farms water bottle pre-filled with water when they cross the finish line.

Merrell Middle Of The Pack Award
A Merrell gift certificate will be given to the person who finishes in the middle of the pack – half way between the first and last finisher. For example if there are 31 finishers the person who placed 16th would win. In the case where there’s an even number of finishers the person who placed with an even number would win. For example if there are 30 finishers the person who placed 16th would win.

AWARDS
Hand-crafted awards will be given to the top three overall male and female finishers. Each Award winner will also receive a gift certificate from Merrell worth $110! These gift certificates can be redeemed on their website for a pair of shoes from their Barefoot Collection or any other item. Given that there were 31 finishers in the barefoot division in 2011 the chances of winning a Merrell prize is very good!

AWARDS CEREMONY
The awards ceremony for the Barefoot 5km race will begin at 12:30 pm.
