A rare post here for me, because I'm a very infrequent beer drinker. Tonight I'm having a Sail & Anchor brewery "Monkey's Fist Pale Ale" that a mate gave me. Not bad.

I don't know about the rest of the world, but in Australia there seems to be a competition among boutique brewers to come up with the silliest name for both beer and wine - I suspect that is because the market tends to be saturated by too many choices and the only obvious thing to do is to pick the one with the funny name.

Went to Oktoberfest party over the weekend (if you have a really good memory you might recall I posted about this also last year). A local group of home brewers get together and throw a big party every year, and two of them I work with - one actually being a supervisor of mine a few years ago. Tons of great food and deserts, and entertainment too!

The alphorns were a nice touch!

    So many homebrews!

    IMG_20140920_175218-800.jpg
Backside of the tap wall! About 200 gallons of beer!

I had to drive myself home (and it was a long drive) so I didnt go too crazy. But over the course of the evening I probably sampled at least a dozen of them. I'd just fill my souvenir mug about 1/4 each time. Several great IPA's there, my favorite being an "Only Amarillo IPA". Also an interesting IPA was brewed also with Jasmine. Also had some great English and Scottish clones, a couple Oktoberfests, Helles, Pale Ale, and Dark Lagers.

Tried a new one tonight (I think, couldn't remember if I had it before) Southern Tier's Imperial Pumking. Brewed with pumpkins and spices, 8.6%. Pretty darn good, though for the price  I don't think I'll buy another, at least in the 22oz bottles. Made venison chilli tonight and also my healthier cornbread, went pretty well with that. Such a great way to end a long hard day of work, and my first run after a week and a half of rest.

Oatis Oatmeal Stout from Ninkasi Brewing Company. Thick as mud, but very good. Made the six pack last all week by only drinking one per night.

Yup^ except I'm more into the Christmas ales... picked up my first 6 pack of Great Lakes Christmas ale yesterday. Actually, I went a little crazy last year stocking up on it and have a full 6 pack leftover from last year still in the basement. Will be interesting to compare the aged one to the fresh one. I've got some from Southern Tier as well leftover. Despite its higher ABV, Southern Tier 2XMAS did not age as well as GL Christmas Ale.

Tried some new beers this weekend that I thought were decent. Wee Angry Scotch Ale from Russell brewing, and a IPA from Big Rock Brewing. Both beers are from Canada. I preferred the IPA if I had to make a choice between the two. Barley Brothers opened a bar within walking distance of my house and they pride themselves on having about a 100 or more craft beers on tap. Got my work cut out for me if I'm going to try them all. :D

Sad, sad, sad, sad, but I think this thread has received more views than any other on the BRS. I mean I could look it up to compare, but...why bother? We know better, now don't we. ;)

Ha! I thought I was the only one that had any Great Lakes Christmas Ale left from last year! I've got 2 six packs left. That is probably my favorite beer in the winter, but I tend to ration it throughout the year. I last had one about three weeks ago, and it seemed fine. I'm also interested in comparing the aged stuff with fresh. Sounds like a good project for some snowy Saturday evening in front of the fire.

I call it carb loading for my runs. We have to compare beer like those energy gels that people use on long runs. :D
