Hello all, My name is Angie and I am the Iowa Chapter President. I decided to do this because well someone had to step up and get this thing rolling so here I am!! With race season and warm weather in full swing here in Iowa its a fantastic time to start or further your barefoot running journey and I will do all that I can to help you along.
Hey Angie, I make it over to Hey Angie, I make it over to Iowa 1 - 2 times a year. My BIL lives in Marion so we will drive out to visit. Are you close to there? The next time I make it out that way it would be nice to run with another BFR.
Hi everyone!Im a new Hi everyone! I’m a new (since 07/31) BFR, though my name is accurate: I have been going barefoot year-round for a long time and gave myself the moniker when I started to walk the March of Dimes® WalkAmerica™ (now March for Babies&trade barefoot (when it was ten miles!), and it stuck since I was the only barefoot one. Since then, I have done other charity events such as the American Cancer Society, AIDS Project, and OneIowa. It is my goal to do a 5K run one of these days, then more. I will be looking for a barefoot-friendly indoor track for winter so as to protect my lungs from frigid air, though I have no problem with the snow. Happy barefoot walking/running/living all!
Welcome Barefoot Walker. Welcome Barefoot Walker. You're in good company here as the Iowa Chapter is a top notch chapter. I just started running barefoot July 1st so I'm not too far ahead of you. I did my first barefoot 5k earlier this month and it was fantastic. I set a new PR and shaved about a minute off my pace from the year before (which was in minimalist shoes.) I've gone to Des Moines twice for the Iowa Chapter meetups and have enjoyed running and visiting with the group immensely. So what part of Iowa do you live in? I'm just outside of Cedar Rapids.
I am truly impressed that you I am truly impressed that you can walk ten miles. I find it's easier for me to run than to walk. Welcome! Glad to have you here!
I live in Des Moines also, in I live in Des Moines also, in Capitol East. I run around the neighborhood mostly, but yesterday did some downtown around the library while shooting pictures of the colorful trees. Just remember: I am an extreme barefooter. By that I mean always and everywhere. The farthest I walked barefoot in one sitting was 17.3 miles, and not by choice other than using a taxi. It took me around eight hours. My legs were like rubber when I got there, and I was badly chafed, but made it. There is a story in that which I will post at a later time if you’re interested. My best time for a continuous run is still under thirteen minutes so I have my work cut out for me to do a 5K. You can look me up on YouTube for some videos of me shoveling snow and (more recently) running. If you go there and put “Barefoot Walker” in quotes then add snow you will find me. I happened to find a BFR in Kansas City who got on the local news station for running in snow—in shorts! (That is something I can’t do; I bundle up in winter.) He runs outdoors year-round, and says the cold does not bother him (though of course it is rarely as extreme there as here), so that gives me encouragement to try it when the season is upon us. Happy barefooting!
Welcome Dave! Look forward to Welcome Dave! Look forward to getting to meet you sometime. I'll be in Des Moines for the half marathon on the 16th. Good luck with your running progression. Shouldn't have any problems with your feet!
Update 11/11/2011: My first Update 11/11/2011: My first BF running in snow occurred on the ninth. It went well. My lungs have not complained about the cold yet, but we have a long way to go. I now am able to run between ten and fifteen minutes at a time, maybe with one of walking. I’m still looking for an indoor gym which permits bare feet. Any suggestions? Stay bare and keep running!
hi Barefoot Walker!I don't hi Barefoot Walker! I don't know of any barefoot friendly gyms yet but only because I have not tried yet. With the cold coming I might have to start looking. I am so not a fan of winter! Stay warm! Oh I was also told that some of the parking garage stair wells are heated. That could be great cross training!
