    Hi there!

I'm Corinne, I'm French but have been living in Germany since 1999.

I have been walking in minimalist shoes only for the last 2 1/2 years and only started running two months ago. I'm still in the early stages. I started in Xero shoes and am planning to go barefoot in the spring, I'm too much of a wuss to start now. I also just started wearing socks because my feet were way too cold.

Looking forward to learning lots here and meeting barefoot runners. :)

Thanks! I have actually joined both already, plus the UK chapter. My partner is English and I have quite close connections with England (Eastbourne) and, of course, my two boys are French/English

We won't unfortunately. A shame because when we are in the UK, we are in Eastbourne, next door to Brighton really...
But, I was told in the Germany chapter that the German event will be in Marburg and that is not too far from me :)

I am just transferred from Kenbob's original runningbarefoot group on Yahoo, per his email announcements that he is planning to close that group. So now here I am. ;) I hope the rest of the gang like Rick Roeber, barefoot Jon in Seattle, Ted, Todd and the others who I met at the Fremont and Queen Anne runs have safely made it here.

Hello everyone. My name's Alex. I'm just starting out barefoot running. Based in Belgium (Brussels). I think I might probably have gone a bit too far too quickly (I see this is a common affliction of the newly converted barefoot runner). I started with 500m runs then went to 1km, then 3km and everything was going great. Then I went running with a friend and she wanted to go to 6km. It all felt fine so I followed. Not immediately after that run but shortly thereafter, I developed a strange pain pretty much on my medial malleolus. It's actually on the tip of the bone and then a bit down the front of the bone. It doesn't hurt when I run but it seems to get worse after I have run and hurts a lot when I bang it or press in that particular area. I suspected a form of tendonitis but as far as I can tell from checking stuff out on the internet, there are no tendons that connect there or even that run through just there. The anterior tibial tendon runs the closest but it's not that close and doesn't hurt at all when I apply pressure to it or flex. I saw an osteopath/physio guy who specialises in acupuncture who diagnosed tight ligaments. He did what osteopaths do (realligned my pelvis) and then did what acupuncture specialists do and loosened various muscle groups that he identified as being overly tight and said that I should be running again in a couple of days. I am sadly not because the pain and sensitivity of the area is still pronounced. As I said though, it doesn't hurt esxpecially when I run. It is all rather strange.
Does anyone have any idea what this might be and could anyone recommend the type of doctor I should go see (maybe a sports physio with access to scanning machinery - xray and mri)?
Thank you very much and happy running
    Alex

Welcome, Alex. It certainly does sound like you've done Too Much Too Soon (TMTS), which usually results in some sort of injury as it has for you. My injury, having basically done the same thing as you, ended up being a stress fracture of the third metatarsal head. An x-ray is probably a good idea, although stress fractures often will not be visible on an x-ray (mine was not). I live in the US and don't have any contacts in Belgium, but we have a lot of European BF runners on here, some from Belgium I believe. You might check out our Chapters section to see if we have a Belgium chapter. I know we have a German and a French chapter if your home is close enough to either of those countries to be more convenient. I'd suggest you stop running until you either figure out what's wrong or it mostly stops hurting. If I had stopped at that point in my own BF running transition experience, I would not have experienced the stress fracture which cost me 10 weeks of very painful healing time with no running at all.

We're glad to have you here with us. I'd bet you'll get some other suggestions from our members as well, both on the injury and on connecting with other BF runners near you.

    Phil

Sounds like you have some good insight on your trouble, but feel free to post this in the Ask the Docs forum for advice. Good luck and welcome!

    Hi everyone,

My name is Basti and I'm living in a quite hilly part in the west of Germany. All my life I've been a backpacker and hiker. Several years ago I suffered a severe damage in my spine after an accident. Doctors told me I wouldn't be able to do any sport for the rest of my life. As I wasn't willing to give up my hiking I started to reduce the weight of my pack and improved on my skills. With less gear I was able to switch from boots to shoes to trail runners to minimal shoes. Surprisingly the less I had on my feet the more my back improved. Finally I could do distances and trips I wasn't able to do even before my accident. And I became faster, too. That's when I started running.
With a background in backpacking I prefer long distances and trails. I usually avoid tarmac roads. When I run I do it for the fun of it, not for PBs. I see myself as a runner not a racer. You probaply won't find me doing official races. But in the very seldom case you see me competing in such an event, I'm probaply having a drink mid run and doing smaltalk with other runners. Minimal shoes/ huaraches are just another tool in my box. When I need this tool, I use it. When I don't need it, I do without.

Wilkommen, Basti. I lived in Stuttgart-Moehringen for 3 years and loved it. A good friend of mine is from Ernst, closer perhaps to where you live. I'm glad you've found our group.

Your description of your running sounds much like mine, and I also do both BF and minimal running as the situation makes sense to do. Enjoy - Tschuss!
