UPDATE: We have a visitor...

Any cat person who's had cats for any real period of time knows why a cat kneads. In my family, we call it making biscuits.

For the other point, there are "experts" who would say that a cat brings its prey to its master in hopes that the master will eat it; it wants to feed us, not just have a safe place to munch down. There was a video done of house cats who went about their day with a camera attached to their collar (Cat Cam), and it showed how many small animals they went around killing and eating. It was an insane amount of killing, and most of the time, they didn't bring their prey home to eat it because they wanted a "safe place" to do so. I know with my three cats, it's "rare" when we actually see what they catch, either dead or alive, so can you imagine how many they actually do catch?

My cats have always specialised in catching mice and releasing them in my house. I see it as their plan to save having to go outside to hunt when it rains. One mouse took refuge inside the speaker of our hi-fi - I tried to tempt it out with a piece of cheese but left the room for a few moments and came back to find the cheese had been dragged inside the speaker, so now it had siege rations.

I just can't read that article, Sid. It would make me so very sad.

It's not a good idea to get rid of cats. They keep the rodent population down. Back in the 14th century, the Black Plague that killed over 50% of the population of Europe, something like a couple hundred million people. Back then, people thought that cats were the instrument of the devil, so they killed them openly in the streets having huge parties. But then people started to get sick with the Plague and die. They didn't realize that the cat was responsible for keeping this Plague at bay. I read something about the fleas carried by rodents being the true culprit. Anyway, when they put two and two together, they figured it out, stopped killing cats, and everything normalized.

So where dogs are bred for certain tasks, cats don't have to be. They know their task.

Interesting.

And the article title is what worried me. a-plan-to-save-new-zealands-birds-get-rid-of-cats

Yes, I've recently heard an interview with some researcher in feline behavior (big and little cats as I recall), who said cats drop their prey wherever they live sometimes just because their heart wasn't into eating it right then and they might want it around later.
My cats typically bring home *parts* of things, and a regular exchange around our house is "mom, watch out around the car in the garage; there are some mouse parts behind it. At least I think they are mouse parts....."

"it thinks of you as a fairly pleasant roommate that just happens to be freakishly large for reasons it can’t comprehend."

And I'm exceptionally gifted at opening doors, both sliding and hinged. It's one of my big not hairy cat tricks. They have me perform it often for entertainment.
