Happy New Year! We're overdue for a beginner's workshop on barefoot/minimalist running. Everyone is welcome - beginners, veterans, and those who are just interested in the topic. I've scheduled this for Sunday afternoon, February 12th, a week after the Superbowl and a week before the Austin Marathon.

We'll meet at Butler Park, which is the green area just west of the Long Center and across the steet from Auditorium Shores downtown. It's central, and has lots of surfaces to try: grass, concrete sidewalk, brick, and asphalt. Beginners should not expect to run too far the first time. If you've been running in traditional shoes, the foot, ankle, and calf muscles will need time to adapt and strengthen, and it's recommended that beginners go no farther than a mile. Doing too much too soon is inviting injury - a little like going to the gym for the first time and trying to lift 500 pounds. There is a longer route around the park for experienced barefoot/minimalist runners.

Parking: Parking is available on Riverside Drive along the north side of Butler Park, in a lot in the southwest corner (at the corner of Barton Springs and Dawson Roads), and, if needed, in the parking garage next to the Long Center.

Valuables: Since it's an open city park, there's no place easy place to store keys, phones, or shoes, though we won't venture too far away from our meeting place. I recommend securing whatever you can in your car.

Weather: As always, winter weather in Austin is unpredictable. If February 12th turns out to be a day of freezing temperatures, frigid winds, and sleet and snow, we'll likely reschedule!

More information is on the Austin Barefoot Runners meet-up site here.

Hope to see you on the 12th, Jim
