Here we go again boys (and maybe girls this month?). Here's Paul's message: There will be no time for anyone to rest on their laurels however, as here is the link to the spreadsheet for the September competition: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/151CvRBUOFtFAZacFcGMr0b5XE07EYZS4w25sY3C60pQ/edit?usp=sharing As you should already know, the scoring system has been changed for this month. This month’s competition is somewhat biased towards chapters with lots of members out running but doing a lot less mileage than some of the ‘running machines’ that we have in the BRS J. This competition is for those of you that maybe only do 5km or 10km a week, to encourage you to do those few extra runs. Every member that does 25km during September will earn 1 point. Every member that does 50km will earn 3 points. Any miles done over 50km will not earn any additional points! Rally your troops by sharing this link with your fellow chapter members. The competition will start at 12:00am UST, September 1, 2014 and finish at 12:00pm UST, September 30, 2014. As for last month, whenever you do a run, walk or hike in bare feet, huararches or minimalist running shoes, add your username in the top row on the front sheet and your distance in the row of your chapter. (If your chapter is not there already, please add it.) Then when you do additional runs during the month, just update the distance each time. (The two back sheets do all the clever sums needed to calculate the real-time rankings. It is not necessary to enter any data onto these sheets.) NOTE: There has been a special request that all members use the formula =0+5+5 etc. on the spreadsheet to allows others to see what length and number of runs the top performers are doing. Remember …. As a minimum, going for a run means you have your running gear on and do a run, walk or hike of one mile or more. If you THINK it doesn’t constitute a run, then it probably isn’t! This competition relies entirely on your honesty.
I'll either get my 50k all in one run or may not get any this month.... I have a busted rib and possibly a broken metatarsal from the long run toward the end of the month.... during the "rain loop", I slipped and fell on my side. My chest was tight the next day - but that's not unusual after running for 9 hours, so I didn't think anything of it. Since then, every sneeze, cough, laugh, etc. is a killer!!!! Also, the Wednesday after that last long run, I started back up with an easy 4 miles. I was tired, but happy to be back at it. The next day, I busted out a 5-miler and had everything feel like it was wrong. Right Top of Foot Pain, knee niggles, shins, calves, everything. Then I drove 16 hours overnight to a family reunion. Got a little rest and some beers, got up Saturday and busted a little over 4 miles in PA. That run hurt. I felt like I limped the last mile +. That night I drank way too much more, got up and drove overnight home again. So I haven't exactly had a lot of rest.... we'll see. I had planned a 51 miler Sept 14th: https://ultrasignup.com/register.aspx?did=26155 This is a great event! I know the race directors and they do a good job. Tons of comradery. This is a flatish course, and there are 3 distances: 17 miles (half ultra), 34 miles (ultra), 51 miles (ultra and a half). I've planned on the 51, I'll do it if the pain goes away. I'd love to meet some of you guys there. And then Arkansas Traveller 100 Oct 4th: https://ultrasignup.com/register.aspx?did=27716 But I'm afraid it's going to sell out before I'm sure the foot is OK..... Oh well. BOYS AND GIRLS ----> Get us some points!!!!
I think the idea is to try to promote getting as many members involved as possible. I sent notes to every active member to try to get them involved last month... didn't really work... at least we got Chicago Barefoot Runner at the end. Next month is supposed to be somewhat different - we'll see what they do!
Exactly right OBAAT. We want to see more people running not just you 'machines' running more I'll still be doing a Top Performers report at the end
As well intended as the new rules may be for promoting participation, talking a little smack is still fun, lol.
You guys are bringin' it! 3rd place with only 5 runners so far, and welcome David Levinson to the competition!!! I'm sorry I haven't been able to help yet.... did visit with the PT today - she threw an ultrasound directly into the 2nd metty, and I didn't jump off the table in pain, so she's pretty sure I didn't break it!!!! Not sure, but it could be tight or fatigued stuff in the shin/calf. I'm working on it! Way to go, guys! Keep up the good work.
Fell off the air again but just updated my entries. Felt crazy great after my longest true BF run of the season last Saturday but Sun through Wed, life (very sick parent), work, a cold, and miserable morning weather all got in the way and either got nothing or just stair stepper (that I don't put on the sheet) but finally got two nice early morning 7.5 milers in with my Lunas on Thur and Fri morning. Didn't really enjoy getting out the door either of the two days - something about the dark/damp 40/50 degree mornings really conspires against me but once I was out there and really enjoyed myself/had some time to clear my head and put some stresses in perspective.
Boys. I'm off foot for another month. Doc says stress fracture 2nd metty. Due to favoring the left during that 38 miler and my Morton toes. Have to reevaluate what I'm doing here.
Oh no OBAAT. That's not good. Everyone seems to be dropping like flies! You're the second I've heard of that's gone down with a stress fracture this week! Take it easy. Do other stuff. Get well soon mate .
Very sad news. I can only imagine how you must feel. Not being able to run for a whole month is going to suck. Just do what Bruce Lee did OneBite; when he hurt his back, he was out for six months. He used that time in bed to consolidate all his knowledge and even begin work on his book: The Tao of Jeet Kune Do. I'm not saying write a book on martial arts, but, some people believe stuff happens for a reason. Maybe there's something to capitalize on in this down time. Rest up, and get well soon.
Hahaha! You write it. I'll read it! If it's anything like your dedication to running, it'll be a slam-dunk (err a hand-chop through cement blocks, that is!).
Don't know who BroadArrow is... but thanks for the miles!!! You guys are awesome! In fourth!! Wish I could help.
greetings. i'm a longtime lurker from downstate who has recently been drawn out of hiding. so three things come to mind: 1) can we put up enough cold miles that the powers that be decide to split us out of the USA counting in the winter challenge? 2) does anyone want to plan ahead and try to get a bunch of barefoot runners to show up for the same race sometime? i am a mild fan of the "illinois marathon" since it is close to me and centrally located. the course is barefoot friendly, i'd say (having done it twice). friendly enough, at least, and a pretty well run shin-dig. they run it in april which is pretty early in the "season", i guess. but the point is that it is far enough off that maybe a small group could be recruited to "represent". 3) the zeal of a convert...
Heheh, I wonder about that number 1 myself. I put my name on the list. Now we just need some cold weather.
Speaking of the winter challenge - where is the link for this? I stumbled on it yesterday and now can't retrace my steps. Seems like it needs a link more prominent on the site/forums (unless I'm blind which is equally possible) thx. Regarding an Illinois meetup/run, a work trip of mine got canceled so I'm considering doing a shorty (5k) next weekend. http://www.active.com/saint-charles...-ghosts-vs-ghouls-faceoff-5k-2014?int=72-3-A8 have a not-too-original costume idea that lends itself well to being barefoot. (thank goodness the hulk's pants never fall off when he transforms).
