Ok, so I have a question. Based on our somewhat agreement on this site that running shoes are bad for feet and in general designed out of thin air to sell to consumers, are not bras a little like shoes? Isn't the argument for bras that they 'offer support'? Haven't we heard that argument before?

    Are bras just a 'convention'?

    Aren't bras uncomfortable?

Would breasts in fact be firmer and stronger if women didn't wear bras?

Do women actually like bras? (But then, people like shoes too...)

Also, what did our female ancestors do when running with the tribe, hunting down antelope? Did they just have smaller flatter breasts back then? Isn't running without a bra painful?

I'm only about 1/5 kidding. The other 4/5s is really curious.

Posts of hot women in bras optional, but encouraged.

Ok, thanks! So am I just way off base with the bra/shoe comparison?

Maybe Kate Kift can come back and tell us all about the boob wobble.

No, it's not like barefoot running. The mammary tissue is heavy, and it's supported by ligaments and connective tissue. Over time, as women age, the connective tissue and ligaments start to rip, and the breasts begin to sag. It's not muscle - those can't be repaired. Hence, saggy breasts that wiggle even more. Our ancestors had boobs that stretched down to their navels. The breast situation may have provided a cue to men as to how likely it is the woman is still fertile.

Bras now? Yes, they are more comfortable, thank you very much.

Probably the only real analagy would be that in some cases a woman may feel more comfortable braless and not be doing any harm to her breast tissue, but societal pressures/Madison avenue have her convinced that she needs to wear one regardless.
My wife chooses when and when not to wear one based on what feels better at the time , but our adult daughter responds to any of her braless outings with a stern "Mother!!!"

Well, society and bra manufacturers keep trying to convince me to push mine up. I'm small, and I have to order online to get ones in my size that aren't push-ups.

Are big boobs a modern part of our evolution? Men are getting taller, out hearing is getting worse and bigger boobs? I like boo s a lot but they seem terribly inconvenient.

Actually, if your barefoot running form is perfect, there is no need to wear a bra, because technically nothing should be bouncing. So, in an indirect way, shoes and bras are related.

Yes, that's what I believe as well - at least in theory!:D
But I think there is a difference between "bouncing" (= up and down movement) which should happen much less with a correct running style and "lateral movements" (= swinging from side to side).
This latter can't be avoided if the upper body is relaxed with a natural arm swing during the run. The bigger the breasts, the more they will swing around, the more they will tear on connective tissues. Big breasts are rather heavy to carry and hurt when they swing around - and this swinging around of two heavyweights attached to the upper body also slows down quite a bit...
For small breasted women it is quite possible to run without a bra - but then, prudish social convention wants them covered anyway and wearing a shirt without a bra would cause chafed, bloody nipples.
(In case of doubt I would personally prefer to wear a bra instead of a shirt.:p)

At least for us smaller girls the shoe comparison holds up. The industry suggests that we need a more specialized industrial quality product than we really do (i. e. more expensive). I usually run in a child's training bra. It is hard to get a 30 - 32 A around here. I believe it was Zapmama's? blog where she talked about running in a bikini top. I've tried it and love it. My apologies if it was someone else.

As to the necessity - social convention and comfort. It is probably comparable to peoples' like of compression shorts or sleeves.

I guess to be comparable to running without shoes it should be bra- AND shirt less;)

HannahC - this is where I purchase my bras:
    http://ittybittybra.com/
They are wonderful! Although, go through the measurements and have them help you find your size. They are sized differently. I'm a 32A in regular bras but a 34B with them.
I've never had difficulty finding a sports bra. XS works for me. Target's C9 XS bras are tiny!

I really don't enjoy running without a bra. I think it's somewhat a misconception that small women don't need any support, although we can get away with less spandex. The thing is, there's not a lot of difference between women in the amount of mammary tissue (the heavy parts) that are in the boobs - the size differences come from the amount of fat, which is light. So the smaller boobs are almost as heavy. And can do plenty of damage to those ligaments and connective tissue if left to pull and bounce. Which, like I said, isn't reversible.

I remember back when I was pumping breastmilk for my daughters. I made milk in excess. I'd look down at the bottles I'd pumped, then look down at my bra, and just wonder "Where the heck did all this milk come from anyway?!?!?!" It seemed impossible.

I have nothing to add here....but I LOVE this thread!

My wife is not hugely endowed, and doesn't run barefoot, but occasionally she does run bra less and it is very hard for me to concentrate....on running.

I found to be braless more comfortable.
The beauty of owning a treadmill is that I can run anytime with the bare minimun if you know what I mean.
I must have good form because the girls don't bounce at all, maybe they are just well behave.
