If your aim is to run "barefoot," then start out by running "barefoot." Don't muck it up by running with something on your feet that will just slow down your progress, give you a false sense of protection, and potentially injure you. In fact, it's best to start on the roughest terrain, think gravel, that you can handle even if it's for short amounts.

If your aim is to run in minshoes, again, start out by running "barefoot." Why? Barefoot running will teach you more about how to run gently and carefully than any shoe at any thickness (including socks) will ever do. Barefoot running will teach you how to run in footwear properly! Then, for those times when you MUST wear shoes, your minshoes shouldn't harm you if you pay attention to what your feet are telling you. Just remember, TMTS (too much too soon) comes from thinking you can do more than you are ready for, and minshoes feeds right into it.
