Remember the Holiday Marathons? Well it's founders have been shut-down by Parks because they had the audacity to question NYC Parks Dept plan to asphalt The Putnam Trail in Van Cortlandt Park. Please show your support by signing the Petition with your message to the City _not_ to widen this iconic green space and paving it over with asphalt: http://www.savetheputnamtrail.com/petition/

I signed it. I'm from upstate NY, but I wouldn"t want the state paving our trails. What a waste of money, we are already in debt. The paved trails up here are buckled from tree roots. They are a danger to bicyclists and pedestrians.

Thank you for signing and sharing your experiences.
It's a battle as the NYC officials has latched on this as a pro-bike vs anti-bike brouhaha. It's a tactic. But they're winning as most are not aware of this issue.
I close with a poignant letter that got to us and inspires us too:

I always go hiking there with my family. Yes it's impossible with a stroller
but that is the whole point - you want children to experience a rare glimmer
of nature in New York, so we used to take the kids out of the strollers and
carried them. They loved it then and they love it now. The Putnam trail is
an example of nature reclaiming space (the old rail tracks). It should
neither be tamed nor improved, for it is a glimpse of nature chaotic
and rough in an overly manicured metropolis. It is glorious!

Signature #1559, waiting approval..... I've have not ever been on the putnam trail, can't say I won't ever make it there but at the moment it's unlikely. I'd hate to see the trail or any trail paved for that matter.
